Anderson123 41,862
It's a cute song and I like it but don't really love it that much. I'm just glad Gaga knows what to keep for her own albums and what to put out there for side projects.

This made me go from cheesy to godly in the way i perceive it now. Exactly! Also the way the sentence is structured, "see me to my grave cause I found god in the shape of a woman", there are layers of catholic guilt coming from a queer woman's point of view, it's just delicious Being a sapphic elevates this song to another level I don't believe in the glorification of murder, I do believe in the empowerment of women 1

LD and HBDUWM both clear it with ease, imo, in part because they’re rich with details and specificity that I think are missing on SOAW (rich explicit and implied harmonies and vocal layers, carefully crafted instrumentals, hooks on hooks etc.) I get what you're saying, but we can't always get a HMH re: songs for movies. I do like it much more than I thought I would and yes, I like the verses. Hating on them is a stab through my heart. Jk, nobody loves EXACTLY the same music (although we're close a lot of the time) The chorus is lovely, but I agree, it's a tad too repetitive and the entire song does have much less funk and disco, which it clearly wanted to have. But maybe when this became her cameo song they toned down the funk/disco because a contemporary bitchy pop star wouldn't really have that sound imo. I do however really love the airiness of her voice here, it's nostalgic but not exactly like when she began - it's multiple steps beyond. I love that variation. I wouldn't compare SOAW to anything from Mayhem - she obviously had much, much more time and emotional space to craft everything in it, with all of its extra cryptic, satisfying and downright brilliant details/layers. Mayhem and Mayhem Requiem go so much deeper especially if you go through the many mental mazes built into those songs. And yes, totally agreed that everything on Mayhem was extra rich with details and specificity (like you said "rich explicit and implied harmonies and vocal layers, carefully crafted instrumentals, hooks on hooks etc.") It's like Runway would also never survive the chopping block for that album either. SOAW just surprised me and tickles my fancy in a different way like many songs of hers can do to me sometimes. And @gagzus has another serious point about what may lie hidden in the core of this song, it's very open for interpretation and almost asks the listener to participate. Maybe the endlessly possible meanings make me like it extra too - I have several different theories, even through casual listening. ldk, this song grabs me on a different level than for example, anything Harlequin or Mayhem (not completely, as I said I'm not 100% on the result and the lack of a proper climax lets it down on almost a base level even though I like her playing with structure) but it's def not a skip for me in the least. I expected a lot from the song, based on the title, and I love it more than I thought I'd love a written-for-DWP2-song. The first verses aren't gibberish like some imply, imho, they're about predator vs. prey - being switched this time - and how she's gonna put her hooks in you, no matter how you try to escape. Which fit with how she played her cameo But in all seriousness, this song has more subtext than one might think on first glance. I'm seeing so many patterns that match her other work that this could very well have been a reworked demo to make her a pop diva instead of her actual meaning. Sorry for going OT for a second but I didn't yet have the chance to ask you: What did you think of Glamorous Life vs the snippet we were drooling over? I haven't had the chance to ask you yetl Edited Saturday at 04:25 PM by Apec

dynamite 65,789
I don't dislike it, it's not a bad song. But it feels like an afterthought that I already heard in better forms and don't feel the need to hear again. I haven't had the chance to ask you yetl I definitely get the appeal and, to your and @gagzus’ point, I appreciate the meta level of it being about her public persona for sure. She writes at such a high caliber that I honestly just hold her to a higher standard than a lot of other pop artists because I certainly enjoy SOAW more than I enjoy a lot of what’s out rn, it just doesn’t quite scratch the itch I hoped it would. GL, on the other hand, I loved. It’s soaring, sweeping, melodic, cinematic, and her vocal performance is excellent. The real highlight of the bunch, imo. GL, on the other hand, I loved. It’s soaring, sweeping, melodic, cinematic, and her vocal performance is excellent. The real highlight of the bunch, imo. Though SOAW was a highlight for me, I also find GL to be the most (tragically) beautiful of the bunch. My expectations may have been sky high with the Celine Dion + cinematic + Prince-like spoken word epicness of that snippet but it's gorgeous, soaring, deeply moving and the spoken word sections in the background were magic, it's all so sweeping and very melodic (as you said) yet cinematic all the same with a voice that truly is everything. She carried that epic song. I love SOAW but I know what you mean and hold her to incredibly high standards too, poor woman, and Runway didn't scratch that itch for me like SOAW didn't for you. Rap isn't really my thing and Gaga's tour de force in between verses sounded like they put it somewhere deep under water (also didn't appreciate Doechii's "Beeeeeetch" either). But we just got the pure greatness of Requiem too, so I couldn't be more happy! And yes, I think SOAW is meta, but possibly in several other ways too. It's just so mysterious because it could point to so many things. Like I said, my brain builds wildly different theories (many of them meta, but not all, sorry I forgot a bunch... the bright side of meds) just casually listening. One day it's Sapphic , the other about her persona/history of choosing costumes, as she called it, or about what a woman needs to become to truly break the glass ceiling, then it's about the Old Biblical Lilith and so much more. It's always about something completely different all while my brain's either doing something else or tries to rest. Anyway, so glad to hear your opinions. I needed to be brought to the hospital suddenly not too long after we were talking about these songs (and the GL snippet that had just leaked) - nothing too bad, had worse, but then there was even a problem with my GGD account not that long before it got so problematic I needed an ambulance (the way I remember both just as vividly ) and it was still a problem after I came back. But that was then also solved fairly quickly thereafter so I could finally be fully back here when the songs were out for like a week and a half and I truly wanted to know your opinions, especially about GL as we'd just been hyping ourselves up over its grandiose, gorgeous sneak peak before everything went down the drain for me for a little while. Thanks for answering Edited Saturday at 06:06 PM by Apec
