I feel like the only person who liked and understood this movie lol. I love when studios like DC/Marvel deviate from their normal “superhero” shtick and remake their characters in more grounded perspectives.
this joker and Harley duo to me was a match made in heaven. I loved the whole “is she real or not” vibe I got from the film which made me feel a bit for Arthur. Idk the whole thing just has layers. I feel like it’ll be appreciated way later on but may have been too soon for something so vastly different than its predecessor.

I always thought after seeing the film that when she sets the place on fire it was such an opportunity for them to escape, experience folie a deux and go on a rampage/k**** spree around New York. Them against the world like Bonnie & Clyde. Then at the end when they are running away from the police (same as Arthur was) ‚Die with a smile’ plays as they eventually get captured. Them being together outside of the asylum would’ve helped the characters build closer relationship and make everything they would’ve done sense. They’re barely spend any time together. So many missed opportunities imo.

This is one of the best sex scenes ever made. How do you think the first sexual experience of a socially and psychologically troubled 50+ year-old man who's barely ever had friends, let alone anything close to a romantic relationship, would turn out in real life? If you don't get this, it's not surprising you don't get the whole movie.

The execution of the scene was bad imo, it didn't deliver well this idea imo

It felt forced and like there was no one to direct them through this, but like "ok gaga u sit here, moan a bit, Joaquin, u be an awkward horny but troubled man" and that's it..

But my remark was about gaga herself as an actress and not the scene as a whole, I feel like she "needs" to do sex scenes to prove that she's a good actress, like she daring and not afraid of sex and nudity.. and I felt that in Joker and Gucci, in both cases, it was more degrading than actually empowering her as an actress.

Like how Emilia Clark had to be naked many times in GOT and most of the times it was basically unnecessary for the story or the scene.. and they started to use a double the moment she spoke up and declined to do scene in nude.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

I still need to see Pocahontas :anveeroy:

skip, it's basically white washing pikahontas and giving her the face of Angelina July, and then glamorizing the americans and making the natives the big bad villains.

Regardless of her acting career, sex and nudity are very much Gaga's brand tho. AHS Hotel, ASIB, HOG and JFAD all feature sex scenes because it's relevant to the plot, one way or another, and of course, hollywood is weird as hell, to say the least, about women's bodies, but all of Gaga's erotic scenes serve the purpose of establishing her (characters) as a dominant figure, opposed to the men she's with

The movie didn't need the sequel. I'd rather see Gaga in some courtroom drama for some high acting exposure or the Cleopatra movie rumor to actually happen within this time.

Let’s shove this Cleopatra idea, the backlash she will suffer being a white woman doing this is not worth it

I'm saying this again. GAGA WAS SCAMMED. I could really tell Gaga was horrified when she was the final cut in the premier.

She should really pick her movies carefully especially if she wants to excel in acting she needs to try different kinds of roles, it shouldn't be like her entire role is 70% singing and no substance to the actual plot. I'd say House of Gucci was a better choice and it was also one of the highest grossing dramas of that year.

Maybe you're right. But I could totally see her playing more down to earth role of a "realistic" strong woman yet with some character exploring

The movie wasn't as bad as they said, reviews online by critics and fans were way too dramatic about it. But  yeah I think Gaga did -well- with the material she was given, I feel like she could've done so much more but that was the script and the story's fault. It p!ssed me off that she was just sitting there in the back. Some musical scenes were a bit extra and didn't need all of them but yeah it's a movie with a lot of issues but at the same time it's like a f*ck you to the guys who were obsessed with Joker from the first film and saw him as a role model.

I think it was overblown how bad it was. It was just ok. But that didn't cut it after the mammoth success the first one had. So many missed opportunities for Joker and Harley to be together and it was no surprise that there were rumours that Gaga was going to be more of a supporting role than a joint lead. I think that's part of the reason why she didn't get acting nominations - awards committees would have trouble determining where to place her and there's a chance of category fraud as well. If she'd played a bigger role and there were more duo scenes together with a different ending, it could've worked out differently.

Also one serious point.. I think it's kind of sad that she's doing almost graphic sex scenes just to prove that she can act and get some points for a chance to get an award.. all her sex scenes were absolutely terrifying (I still have nightmares from Oochi) and useless.

I don't think she's doing them to prove she can act. They always have a point, even if it's just to establish that she's in a relationship now with her co-star, even if we know it's going to happen. It's just the device that Hollywood prefers to use to educate the audience on the status of the on-screen relationship and a timestamp as to where it all started. If anything, sex scenes, if too graphic, can reduce an actor's reputation. But I do get what you're saying. I'm noticing that all her major roles so far involve at least one sex scene. Reminds me of when Gaga said years ago: "Why do directors always want to see me naked?" Obviously, she's had no problem with nudity but it depends how you do it. I never want it done in a way that degrades her. I don't know why you thought her sex scenes are terrifying. AHS and HoG maybe but ASIB's was romantic and Joker's was just...realistic.

It was probably the most awkward sex scene I've seen in a movie and I did think is she gonna get more projects where she doesn't need to do this

But it was needed for her manipulation of him and later saying she's pregnant

I think it was meant to be deliberately awkward. While I don't know if it was ever officially stated that Arthur was a virgin (it would have to be an off-screen reveal as I don't recall it ever being acknowledged in either movie), audiences assumed he was because of how he was portrayed (which is just typical of how society views virgins, but that's by the by). Even if it wasn't Todd's intention for him to be such, maybe he went with the audience's assumption so implied that it was his first time by making him tentative but excited and then it all being over quite quickly with no passion. The lack of passion showed that he didn't really feel anything for her genuinely as he doesn't understand love and relationships and Harley didn't feel anything either as she was just using him and was only out for herself.

I think you're right by saying that it was the most obvious plot device for her to lie about being pregnant. If they weren't shown to be intimate, the audience would be confused or thought they'd missed something or know she was lying immediately whereas because we know sex had happened, there was a part of us that wondered if she was telling the truth. Though wasn't that scene supposed to be in Arthur's head? I remember thinking that there was no way someone who wasn't family would be allowed to visit him first off, let alone stepping into his cell and for them to be left unsupervised.

I also felt it was super realistic for a first time encounter, especially considering Arthur really didn't understand women at all and they were in such an uncomfortable position in a cold jail cell. And it's also realistic for off-the-cuff, unplanned quickie sex where they could get caught at any minute, so they were trying to be quiet about it. Let's face it, this has been the experience of many people, we just don't see it depicted in cinema. Sex scenes usually go one of 2 ways in Hollywood - romantic and gentle (ASIB) or hard and fast (HoG). Rarely do we see the in-between, realistic sex because it doesn't make for as great a scene. I thought it was tastefully done because I was dreading how it was going to be after HoG, afraid Gaga would be half naked or be made to do something degrading. I think some people view it as pointless however because it was just once and was such a footnote that it was easy to forget it happened.

Now that you mention it I'm not sure if it was supposed to be in his head, that makes more sense although in the first movie his ficticious scenario's had him quite confident.
