I think the production on mayhem killed it for me. See, I think the production/engineering is one of the weakest parts of Joanne and is one of the strongest parts of MAYHEM. The engineering on Joanne is just so flat to me that a lot of the more interesting parts of the arrangements get buried into the mix (they sound significantly better live, imo). MAYHEM’s production, on the other hand, I think is way brighter, more crisp, spacious, rich, and detailed.
