My ranking

1. A Star is Born

2. House of Gucci

3. The Devil Wears Prada 2

4. Joker: Folie à Deux

5. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Haven't seen Machete Kills.

Honestly, there isn't a Gaga movie that I actively dislike. I do think ASIB is nearly flawless, HOG is messily entertaining, TDWP2 and SCADTKF are good cameos in good to meh films, and I didn't love JFAD but she did give a good performance. If anything, Gaga knows how to elevate a film!

Honestly she did chose pretty meh movies.. Machete and Sin city are sort of fun but really kind of guilty pleasures if you're a fan of the originals, while the later three were such Oscar grabs, but in a reallly boring way.  AHS hotel was the only acting role that I genuinely enjoyed. It was Gaga on steroids, while others got me thinking why is Gaga in this random situation on screen :ladyhaha:

Tbf they were interesting movies on paper but then the execution was mid at best

REALITY

Haven’t seen TDWP2, so excluding that, ASIB is hands down the best movie she’s been in. HoG and Joker 2 are bad movies, point blank period. ASIB is genuinely a great movie and has, I would say, her best acting. Joker 2 had really had potential to be her best work, and I so wish it was. It combined everything I loved: DC, the first Joker movie (which I loooved even though I know that’s a divisive film), and of course, Gaga. It was literally the most excited I had ever been for a movie and it’s such a shame the whole thing didn’t work out.

We can’t be acting like ASIB isn’t good :max:

Sister, it's horrible. Even I was weirded tf out (if you check my letterboxd you'll see I've always gave it 5 stars but that's not serious. This movie is a bad retelling/adaptation because Bradley sidelined the story to move around his character only. We don't even get to know Ally's last name before the marriage, she's literally the shadow of a man

HOG series directed by Ryan Murphy as a season of American Crime Story would’ve honestly been really good. I have my issues with him, but I think HOG is the type of narrative he handles really well.

And we would have definitely gotten gaga and salma hayek lezzing out

Well he for sure would have kept the lesbian lovers subplot Gaga and Selma wanted

Imagine how unhinged that show would be with Gaga AND Murphy going full camp

Which was because The Countess was written for her, specifically, to just play herself :haroon: all other things were wrong and/or bad and/or evil with the exception of tdwp2

Honestly I wish she'd pick something as insane as Poor things, The substance, Bougonia, Frida etc, like an art horrory film where her insanity could shine. Joker 2 had potential if they leaned into the actual Harlequin where she goes off the rompers and does chaos, but her version was meh at best..like I can't imagine even just reading the scripts and being like yas this is exciting for her roles. Like idk give us a VVitch, maybe something psycholical like hereditary or campy horror like 28 years later.

Oh that would have been amazing. But keep in mind that scripts can change drastically throughout production and there's also the final edit which can cut out a lot. I'm sure the initial brief made more sense, Gaga seemed really invested in Harley and I think Harlequin was her way of going further with the character then what the movie ended up giving her.

That's actually true. Very male gaze and it's a male-focused film about a man and his woes and how his wife (the only female character) reacts to every bit of male drama. I liked what we saw of her, what she brought to the screen which is why ASIB is nearly always my answer, but Ally Maine on the page must've been nearly non-existent. It really wasn't an equally balanced portrait of a codependent marriage in the least but I think she wrung every bit of emotion out of Ally to make her more real. That's not ideal though, verrry true.

I wish she made an indie film or mini series about a girls trip revealing hidden motives, past and present grudges that come bubbling up, misunderstandings, things going horribly wrong, hidden jealousies, thriller/drama style (Sorry, I was just binging several literary thrillers and Jane Harper's Wilderness sprung up in my mind). I'm just dreaming away here. Or would also love a female ensemble comedy, she has great timing. ln short: I wanna see her acting with the girls for once, not pining after the leading man. We're due! Quality director and and a good script are key though since she's a natural imho but her last films didn't know what to do with her, which may have had a negative effect on her spontaneity. All her improv for JFAD and a good deal for HoG was cut out which has to hurt. :duck:

Indie goodness should be next. Now to answer your question... I don't know anymore. I still think ASIB was done well if you were more interested in Jackson's trajectory... HOG had Gaga being amazing but was too muddled a story and cut away too much from the heart of it: How this woman gave everything to this male dominated family (with the patriarch Archetype in Al Pacino and everything, having almost only male characters contrasted with Patrizia was very much done on purpose) only to be traded in for a younger model. This was supposed to dive into why she did what she did - they even shot footage for the pretty important part where her husband was nowhere to be found before and after they removed a brain tumor. Plus her belief in clairvoyance and the manipulation/seduction by Salma Hayek's character was almost completely cut out as well. This was her journey but they had to remove all emotional depth for Jared Leto and (Sorry...) Al Pacino buffoonery? Oh, Ridley...

Maybe ASIB because she acted her ass off, sang live so beautifully and wrote the most gorgeous music for it.
