Shakira performed her greatest hits to a vast crowd at a free concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.

About two million people came to watch the Colombian pop-star perform, according to a social media post by Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

However, BBC Verify analysis of a previous 2025 Lady Gaga concert on Copacabana beach found these crowd numbers are likely inflated.

The 'Todo Mundo no Rio' mega-concert was funded by the city in an effort to revitalise the the local economy, with officials estimating the event would generate approximately R$800 million for Brazil. x

I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that Shakira tours Latin America all the time (she brought this tour all over South America last year!), while Gaga hadn’t been to South America in a decade before Copacabana.  Shakira probably got more locals, but Gaga got people to travel from neighboring cities/countries for the show.

Because Shakira always tours Latin America extensively and has visited Brazil with pretty much every tour including this one.

Copacabana came after 69 stadium dates in the region and another free concert for 400K people in Mexico just two months ago.

She probably would’ve been close to 3 million if she had taken a break. Like maybe 3-4 years with no new music or tour and people would’ve been super hyped to go to Brazil from all over Latin America.
