AI Actors & Writing Are Not Eligible For Oscars, The Academy Announces

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has clarified that only acting and writing for films done by humans will be considered eligible to win an Oscar.

The academy, which controls the US film industry's most prestigious award, on Friday issued updated rules for what kind of work in movies and documentaries would be considered eligible for an Oscar as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology grows.

In updated eligibility requirements, the Academy specified that only acting "demonstrably performed by humans" and that writing "must be human-authored" in order to be nominated for an award.

The Academy called the requirements a "substantive" change to the rules for the Oscars.

The need to specify awards can only go to acting and writing done by "humans" is new for the academy.

In recent months, there have been notable examples of expansive use of AI tools and technology to replace or recreate human work.

Hollywood studios, actors and authors have pursued lawsuits claiming copyright infringement against a number of AI companies.

However, the academy did not issue a ban on AI use in films more broadly.

Outside of acting and writing, if a filmmaker used AI tools in their work, such "tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination", the academy wrote.

"The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award," the group added. 

"If questions arise regarding the aforementioned use of generative artificial intelligence, the Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship."

This isn't just funny—it's hysterical.

Somewhat related, but it's SO annoying when I'm listening/watching a YouTube video and I can just tell the script was Shat-GPT'd from the weird dictation (I guess) and the repeating sentence structures. It just slaps you in the face even when the script is read by a real person!

imo people who never got the chance to learn how to create, have a tool to do so, have a tool to help them turn their visions and ideas, into something, ugly, but still something..

Now seriously, Like everything new, It just needs to be re-evaluate and needs to have restrictions.. like this one.

Artists, voice actors, singers, and anyone who works with any form of art/creation, needs to protected.

AI is here to stay and nothing can stop AI generative "art", beating this horse is a waste of time and energy.

AI is not a tool of the creative it’s literally a tool of stealing from creatives. AI cannot create things out of thin air it uses reference points and combines elements from pre-existing material such as art styles even lyrics. For example when you see those (horrid) Marvel fight scenes online they can’t exist unless someone has already spent the money to make those Marvel things possible. 

Creativity is either something you have or it’s not.

AI generative slop is theft and as a creative person I want it BANNED out of existence

like.. hmm.. most of the digital artists lol

they open procreate and draw some artstyle that someone else created, using brushes that making their lives easy.

all the edits that AI does, you can do it in photoshop using a guide, you can turn anyone to a disney character by yourself. or you can ask AI to do in seconds.

 

You've been using AI in your electronics for years now, how do u think you get such a beautiful pictures? AI is fixing your movements, the scaling of the objects, and so on.

 

AI is here to stay and Matilda from Roma will create a kids book with AI generative art and you have nothing to do about it. 

Once people hated smartphones, wikipedia and the internet as a whole, but here we are.. 

 

 

And if you read carefully my post.. I said that the only solution right now is to put restriction and have more control on it, which is very much needed, because you can't fight something that is widely spread and used now.

 

It's like these people who still scream anti capitalism from their iphone lol
