After deliberation, Minnesota has chosen to side with trans athletes and allow them to play on teams that align with their identity. Cis athletes do not have a law that they can use to sue over, therefore there is no legal reason to ban trans people from competing in their own categories. Notably, this came from a federal court that is largely conservative, with two judges that were appointed by Trump. However, it should be noted that the conservative elements of the government in the US could quickly draw up something to "undo" this ruling, so while this current victory should be celebrated, we should still stay vigilant.

Stuff like this is why I always rail against doomerism. Say what you will about the ways in which far right and corporate influence has corroded our government, but our institutions are nowhere near far gone enough to meaningfully allow for Trump to operate as an autocrat or for civil rights to be widely stripped from the population, in large part because the Constitution and it’s precedent in judicial practice are pretty firm about how the system operates and most of the judiciary has fidelity to it.

Exactly. There’s always a way forward 💪 sometimes it takes an F ton of work and frustration, but as cringe as it sounds, we gotta keep hope!

The Human Rights Campaign says that, while ~70% of young people in the country play sports, only ~15% of trans youths play sports.

The way it's become such a successful wedge issue for the GOP when allowing trans athletes to play on the correct team involves ~15% of a group of people who themselves are only ~0.5% of the population.

A decade or more of campaigns, hundreds of millions of political capital spent, countless hours of legislative debates and judicial hearings, all to vilify ~0.075% of the population (about a quarter of a million people) 'cause it mobilizes just the right crowd of angry white people to elect Republicans :saladga:

It's a distraction because of their garbage policies. Authoritarian governments create culture wars to distract from how terrible they are. While such a tiny percentage of the population is being attacked, millions of people are losing things like SNAP benefits. It's all meant to make you look away from the real issues.
