I get the empathy fatigue that @PartySick is talking about and also the general lack of awareness that you’re talking about, but I just find it frustrating because they are fundamentally the same project. To care about Gaza, imo, necessitates caring about the ethnic cleansing project and lack of Palestinian agency on both fronts. I know I’m soapboxing a little and I’m not diminishing The Strokes using their platform to elevate Gaza, it is just, again, frustrating to see how, even at peak salience for Israel/Palestine, there are key dimensions that are just not being talked about enough and critical dots that are not being connected. (Preaching to the choir, I know hahah)

I share in the frustration.

I just also recognise that the crowd at Coachella will think the West Bank is something their daddy is the CEO of

And now I’m even happier that I just purchased tickets to see them.

Meh, the sceptic in me just sees this as performative allyship for branding and stroking their own egos.

The note on Iran gives it away.

I mean The Strokes have been visibly progressive for some time lol. Also the overwhelming majority of artist and celeb statements about politics are largely performative in the sense that they generally have no tangible material outcome and merely signal moral or ideological alignment, so feels a little silly to single out The Strokes here specifically (especially when most performative celeb “activism” begins and ends with an infographic on their IG story, whereas they actually took a massive platform and used it for targeted visibility).
