Off topic. I know gaga likes to work solo in her performances but imagine her doing coachella or something with JENNIFER COOLIDGE and jennifer keeps repeating throughout the performance ‘these gayss. Theyre trying to kill me’

Most Gen Z know or have heard of Madonna.

But Gen Z is not unique in the fact that every generation has and will have some intentionally dumb people.:ohwell:

True, but we're raised different. We had radios and MTV growing up, with their roll out of all kinds of music just in 1-2 hours slot of shows. The late gen Z don't have that, they mostly listen to what they wanted to on streaming app like Spotify or AM. They mostly don't know many artists until some old hits went viral on tiktok, or their fave artists mention them on a tweet or doing a collab with them..., or until the algorithm introduces them to.

When it comes to past pop culture, it feels like many sects of Gen Z/Alpha have very little curiosity. Like I’ve always been curious to learn about and experience movies, games, shows, and music that were big before I was born/consuming content. I think it comes down to what you said about the algorithm…they just want to consume things put before them, with no research or exploration of their own (which is a bit sad/scary).

Honestly not their fault lmao… I’m a millennial gen z cusper and I only know of Madonna in the context of her being rude to Gaga. She had no direct impact or hits in my childhood.

Take in how we’re technically 2 generations  of pop stars post-Gaga. We went from Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa to Sabrina, Olivia, etc. Keep in mind in between that there was a “death” of pop era because EDM, hip-hop & r&b was the new “pop” (Drake, The Chainsmokers, Avicii, The Weekend, etc).

Lastly, music is much more personalized because of streaming. Hence, Gen z don’t gaf about radio which means the music industry has less power to make a huge star. Now we have 100000 artists that are huge in their niche but won’t be necessarily be household names.

So they’re quite reasonable to not know who Madonna is considering the general information overload these days. I also  don’t think majority of Sabrina fans (she’s Taylor swift aligned)  would be cultured enough to care imo lmao…

I don’t want to fully knock Gen Z. I’m 35 and was fortunate to grow up on cable, radio, MTV, and Blockbuster video. However, I do think it’s important to know some pop culture history. As a child, if I didn’t know about a singer, actor, or pop culture moment, I’d go and research it. People who dismiss the knowledge of pop culture and its icons are missing out on an important bridging of the age gaps and the community that can result in it.

For example: I remember being in my early twenties and having older gay men say “Oh, I bet you don’t know anything about that song.” and then I’d shock them with my knowledge and we’d suddenly become besties and they’d tell me their first memories of hearing a song on the radio or about how they’d be dancing at the club in 1987 with all of their buddies.

why is it surprising? I barely knew about Madonna as a kid and I was born in 1996. Literally could not have picked her out of a lineup until I was maybe like 12? If it wasn’t for her releasing that Justin Timberlake song in like 2008 or whatever it was I wouldn’t have really been aware of her at all until much later tbh

I think its just a bit shocking that the name doesn't even ring a bell... I was born around the same time and just always heard about her/her songs on the radio. I remember being equally shocked when a group of kids had no clue who Cher was because you might not even know what they look like but it just seems almost impressive they've lived their lives never hearing the name of some of the greats in pop culture haha.

But algorithms keep everyone seeing what they wanna see these days and so I get it. Frankly, I don't know 80% of the famous people talked about on this site/other social media because I just don't pay attention to it.

I knew millennials who didn’t know of Cher and thought that was absolutely ridiculous.

I guess this is the same thing!

Yeah, who's Madonna?

she’s supposed to be the mother of jesus christ aka Virgin Mary but some believe she’s also an anti-christ.

so random but this is one of the first songs (along with Britney, Eminem, Akon) my little gen-z bro (born 97) had downloaded on his computer and he’d listen on repeat all day in the 2000s.

Sorry but Madonna Is part of  an elite like Elton , Beatles, Elvis, mj Jackson and the Jacksons, Aretha, Frank Sinatra, Rolling Stones

They aren't that many. Even Aretha isnt really part of that group of you wanna be strict.

Then you know what you know and learn, and however you learn. But madonna trancends the 80s or the dance or pop scene. She Is a multigenerational icon. This Is what i think honestly
