Economy 52,835
EDIT/UPDATE: Mark Carney has won a few more seats that were open on bi-election (so not related to floor crossings this time) and now officially has a majority Government! https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/politics/2026/04/14/carneys-liberals-secure-majority-government-clinching-byelection-wins-follow-for-live-updates/ ‐--------------------- ORIGINAL POST: https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/politics/2026/04/13/canadians-are-disturbed-by-floor-crossers-says-ndp-leader-live-byelection-coverage-starts-here-at-7-pm-et/ Mark Carneys Government is getting very close to a majority Government now only shy 1 seat from the threshold. Majority Governments are generally seen as more stable as it allows them to pass legislation more easily with less gridlock and political compromises The culprit has been "floor crossings", a phenomenom where an elected MP may choose to defect from their party and instead join another party. The Canadian Parliamentry system does not forbid this nor is it unheard of. However they are usually rare and few in between. It is uncommon to have this many floor crossings this quickly. The Conservatives have been clashing with the Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre over his style of leading for some time now who continues to loose support while Carney has inspired a high approval rating and Trust as well as a more moderate position that many Conservatives tolerate in relation to Justin Trudeau The Left Wing NDP party has criticized the crossings as undemocratic as voters do not vote just for their MPs but are also voting on the party they want to win as well Edited April 14 by Economy
Economy 52,835
Another nuance of Majority vs Minority Governments is that a majority Government is guaranteed a term of 5 years while a Minority Government can have early snap elections which on average come every 2 years or so Edited April 13 by Economy

It is not true in a first-past-the-post parliamentary system. When a Canadian goes into a polling booth, they are voting for the individual that they want to serve as a delegate in parliament on their behalf. Their party affiliation is up to them, and is little more than a extra piece of information that may sway voters. But politics is dirty everyone and no party will ever miss a chabce to criticise or smear an oponent with a negative narrative no matter how untrue (and all parties are guilty of it to varying degrees) Ppl are too stupid and uneducated to always see thru it so many ppl will in fact buy into this criticism Also at the risk of being hated here cuz I know GGD is left leaning (and I generally am these days as well)... Mark Carney is one hell of a smart man and very pragmatic. I like him as PM even if hes further to the right on the spectrum than id generally cheer for and I think hes doing a better job than the NDP would do rn Thats just my opinion of course, not a fact. And the more politically active/clued in etc do vote that way (I definitely do). But if you ask the average person on the street how they voted? They could all tell you the party (if they wished) but a non-insignificant proportion wouldn't be able to name their representative just the party. Like in the UK at the next election - if the polling data & the local political party canvassing data tells me that I need to hold my nose and vote for someone centrist like Carney to block Reform winning in my area. You can bet every penny you have I'm voting to keep the worst option out The gays know how to party 1 1

I do absolutely agree that there is a point to be made about how people vote in practice. However, I don't think it's fair of the NDP to criticise floor-crossings for being 'undemocratic' when they're a perfectly normal, intentional part of the system. It's one thing to say "perhaps those MPs should consider their voters and what they voted for" (just as you might when a politician goes back on their word) and another to try and make out it's somehow morally wrong for MPs to do something that they're supposed to be able to do. Economy 52,835
EDIT: Carney now officially has gained majority government due to gains from some bielections from available seats Conservative Leader Pierra Poilievre did not waste time to criticize and accuse PM of winning majority through backrooms deals https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/politics/2026/04/14/carneys-liberals-secure-majority-government-clinching-byelection-wins-follow-for-live-updates/ Can the opposition shut up already? Theres no real evidence of corruption or illegal bribing. Its just thrown around narratives with no evidence to create unfounded suspician @Bronco Liberal majority

I mean politics being good or bad is highly opinionative depending on your philosophys and values but.... imo yes! Carney has extensive experience in the economy, banking and financial markets as hes held good positions in the private sector, was the head of the Central Bank of Canada during the Financial Crisis of 2008 and then got hired by Egland to Run the Central Bank there too due to his credentials, its not often at all a person has been the head of two Countries Central Banks He also has a pragmatic business view and focus on growth in ways such as trying to reduce red tape, making strategic investments, partnerships woth private sector etc but without massive tax cuts to wealthy or big venefit cuts to low income and middle class that tend to be screwed over with Conservatives whrn their in power. Hes also pushing for Canadas Natural Resource sector to grow too (which tbh despite the controversy, has been the only thing we been super competitive in Internationally and ignoring it for years is clearing showing in economic decline as weve failed to grow any other sectors meaningfully enough to offset it so GDP Per Capita has fallen as has productivity). But hes not rolling back environmental regulations as much as the Conservatives would. Instead his main focus has been regulatory approval changes and restructuring processes to try to reduce beaurocratic red tape If it was the USA id say they need more Left Wing politics ala a Bernie Sanders or AOC. But where Canada is now and with the struggle to compete internationally especially with the United States (cuz unfortunately we are very interlinked with them and we got this unfortunate race to the bottom with the wealthy abd Corporations)... I think for Canada Carney brings a well thought out Centrism where we try to compete a little harder for business investment we desperately need but in a way that will screw over ordinary Canadians as much as possible In my opinion hes the best PM weve had in my life time. However its also unfortunate he came abord during such uncertain times with a lot of things going on outside his control and the electorate is not very forgiving or patient. I am not sure how long his high approval ratings will last because Canadas problems wont improve overnight but I hope we keep him long enough to see results! And apparently there are 8-9 more MPs looking to cross over. But they can keep PeePee if that’s what they want. I wouldn’t tell them to stop losing that’s for sure.
