Yeah, it was a sloppy message (she’s not especially articulate, imo), but people blew that **** way tf out of proportion. She’s obviously not conservative (she refused an invite to Pride at Biden’s WH in solidarity with the Palestinians, ofc is very vocal about LGBTQ+ rights) and yet people were trying to act as if she was either MAGA or trying to sabotage the Dems when really, more than anything, her statement read as frustration about her being drawn into the middle of a political campaign.
 

I think her reasoning was fairly immature, because she could’ve just endorsed Harris and qualified it with needing movable pols as opposed to hostile ones but she didn’t feel comfortable with the implications of endorsing Harris and, as a result, it did end up coming across a little “both sides-y.” It read, to me, like someone who rejected the optics of feeling forced or pressured to make an endorsement out of fear of how that might be interpreted by her fanbase (“oh, she doesn’t care about Gaza” “she doesn’t care about xyz progressive issue”). That, to me, is equally an indictment of online political discourse, ideological policing, and compulsory speech as much as I think it’s an issue of her wading into politics without fully being able to own that that means you might have to make calls about stances and endorsements that might be defensible, but ultimately, in a something of a grey area.
 

The whole thing feels broadly symptomatic of Gen Z’s moral perfectionism/fear of being wrong and the ways that that prevents people from actually learning and growing, but that’s a soapbox for another day lol.

Thank you for tolerating and appreciating me throwing a wall of text at you lmao. But EXACTLY, that’s what I find so frustrating about the celeb political discourse: it’s not that it doesn’t matter *at all*, it’s just that it gets blown insanely out of proportion online and people talk about it like Chappell or whoever is somehow directly determining the turnout in swing states when, at the end of the day, her endorsement to Harris would’ve more or less been noise to most, placating to some, frustrating to others, and basically inconsequential on the whole.
