India reduces transgender rights in fresh 2026 law

India has passed a new transgender law restricting self-identification and access to gender-affirming care. The law requires individuals to apply for a "transgender certificate" from a District Magistrate to be legally recognized. To be legally recognized specifically as "male" or "female" (rather than just "transgender"), the law requires proof of gender-reassignment surgery.

The law sets lower penalties for crimes against transgender people (such as sexual abuse) compared to similar crimes against cisgender women.

People who help others recognize their potential gender identity face potential prison charges.

So if you have a friend and they come to you for advice, and they tell you they feel like they don't fit in their body and they explain something that makes you think they might be trans, you could potentially go to ****ing prison for suggesting it? :oprah:

Making it illegal isn't going to make their feelings (their gender dysphoria) go away.

Spoiler

I hope my terminologies are correct here.

And the "transgender certificate" thing SOUNDS ABSURD. What is this clown world even. Am I going to require a cigarette certificate next? :classy:

rosetta stone is rolling in her grave rn 🙏🥀🥀

I dont know. But in almost every aspect society has gotten worse than when I was a kid in the 90s to mid 2000s

People are more agressive, impatient, greedy, selfish than in the past. Im only turning 33 but i see the difference

Then theres politics. More wars and agression now vs countries managing their differences in a more civilized way a few decades ago (at least the developed world anyway)...

Climate change too... was getting more and more attention... now its randomly not all of a sudden?

Pretty sure human civilization hit its peak in late 90s/early 2000s and now has been slowly regressing ever since :madge:

The social contract collapsed in the 00s is the problem.

It marks the moment that the basic principle of society being "making the next gen inherit a better starting point" went out the window.

Its made society as a whole more selfish because without the social contract what is there to actively encourage social cohesion

The gays know how to party

Unfortunately the entire world (both the government and the common people) is shifting more towards right wing conservative and the liberal view (or if I say, more leftist view) is mostly ridiculed and considered delusional.

Regarding this, the Transgender Bill was only introduced in Indian parliament but it's not yet implemented because of widespread protests throughout the country by both the LGBTQ+ community and the allies, and a strong disagreement by various opposition politicians so there's still some hope in it.

The me first mentality definitely is more prominent than ever before. It subconsciously makes ppl behave differently than in the past

Even ppl being on edge all the time is another thing. I remember (at least in my part of Canada), 8 times out of 10 a small mistake on the road and ppl would just hit their break and wait for the danger to pass... the purpose of your honk on your car was to warn of danger, or wake someone up if they fell asleep on the wheel. If something happened quickly and the danger already passed anyway, most people woundnt bother to honk anymore because there was no point or benefit to it (some did but most didnt)

Now u honk at sight of danger, but honk even louder and longer after the fact just to make sure the other driver gets the message that ur pissed at them. The honks main purpose is no longer to be used to warn of danger but instead to get into pissy fights of road rage back and fourth and its f*cking pathetic

I look at these behavioural changes and i shake my head. Were literally becoming more childesh with each passing year :madge:

The world may be shifting more conservative but id argue modern conservatism has also changed (in some ways for the worse). There was always bigotry among many but there was also some silver lining redeeming qualities too for some of them

Now theres absolutely none whats so ever :rip:
