FfFfFfFF 58,286 Posted April 9 Share Posted April 9 (edited) The government of the Republic Moldova has announced a major overhaul of its local administration system, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and improve public services as the country faces ongoing depopulation. Under the plan, the number of districts will be cut from 32 to 10, while hundreds of small municipalities will be merged to ensure each has a minimum population of 3,000 residents. The reform, presented by government officials on April 8, is expected to be fully implemented by the time of local elections in 2027. Authorities say the changes are necessary to address inefficiencies in the current system, where the vast majority of municipalities are too small to function sustainably. The reform also redefines the role of districts, shifting their focus toward regional development. One exception is Taraclia, a district with a large ethnic Bulgarian population, which will be upgraded to municipality status. The initiative marks one of the most significant administrative restructurings in Moldova in decades, as authorities seek to modernize governance and improve living standards across the country. Average Moldovan raion: ~1,000–1,100 km² Average U.S. county: ~3,000 km² Current Moldovan raions (~1,000 km²) are even tiny by European top-level standards, closer in scale to French arrondissements or UK districts- which are third-level subdivisions.
