California might elect a Republican governor

California 'jungle' primary could hand governor's race to Republicans.

The Democrats' dilemma stems from California's unusual election system, in which the top two finishers, regardless of party, advance to the November general election. A Berkley ISG survey released March 18 of more than 5,000 registered voters showed Hilton, a conservative TV host, receiving 17% of the vote while Bianco, the Riverside County sheriff, held 16%.

In third was Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, with 14%, then former Rep. Katie Porter holding 13%, followed by Tom Steyer at 10% and the five other Democratic candidates each getting 5% or less.

Tl;dr - Because Democrats can't organize for sh*t we might lose the governor's race in a state where Dems outnumber Reps 2-to-1 :saladga:

If Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and other well known Democrats throw their weight behind a single candidate in the next few weeks to get just ONE of the Dems above ONE of the Reps then it'll be fine. But this is a ridiculous position to be in :saladga:

Throwback to Newsom's last election where he decided it would be demonstrably easier to beat a Republican in the general than another Democrat so he propped up a Republican opponent in the primaries and basically moonwalked to an election victory.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely getting Republican support to coalesce behind just one candidate would work this time.

We've had these same concerns in previous cycles in Cali because of the jungle primary.

The primary isn't till June 2nd.

Democrats will absolutely drop out between then and now (especially when those with establishment backing start getting paid to throw in behind the stronger establishment pick).

All those names on 5% and lower will be facing a significant tonne of pressure to shut up shop and cancel all remaining self campaigning.

Steyer will likely also be getting multiple offers to encourage him to fall in with Eric Swalwell.

Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Lady Gaga are up for a Grammy.

Taylor has 40% of Grammy voters for her, Gaga and Billie both have 30% each.

If just 11% of non-Taylor voters would go for Gaga, she would win! But because the voters are splitting between the two good artists, Taylor has a chance at winning :bradley:

The way that this has been making my skin crawl for weeks :saladga:

I keep seeing so many ads for each Dem candidate and I really can’t fathom why the party is just twiddling its thumbs and not putting MORE pressure to have the lowest polling ones drop out. Why even run the risk of a statewide and national embarrassment and sink our potential chances in 2028?

Apparently those with 5% or lower have made some kind of asinine pact to stick together and even abstain from debates where they couldn't all be present :madge:

I'm not too worried either but the fact that this is a possibility is total clown boots

Right? Imagine the timeline where we flip red districts with 10, 15, sometimes even 20 point swings but we lose f*cking California because the party itself is dysfunctional and refuses to have clear leadership :sharon:

On top of that, the fact that we're running into this potential crisis after scoring a voter and SCOTUS victory with the approval of Prop 50...it's literally SO stressful. I keep telling my friends about how potentially f*cked we are, and almost none of them know how the jungle primary system works :nooo:

Never mind that the debate scheduled for this weekend was postponed because they didn't bother to invite the candidates of color either...GET IT TOGETHER!!! How can anyone be sure of who to throw their support behind with f*ckups like this??

CA under Newsom has been a sh*tshow too, don't get me wrong, but I can't even fathom how much worse ICE raids, LGBTQ discrimination, wealth disparity, criminalization of the homeless, and the gutting of social programs will get under a Republican governor. The bar is in HELL :messga:

Can we discuss how weird the race has been for Democrats? Kamala Harris, Eleni Kounalakis, and Alex Padilla all refused to run and tbh they probably all would’ve been dominating the race.

Honestly its kind of shocking to me that Kamala didnt run.

Is she seriously convinced she has a chance in 2028?
