NATO air defences in the eastern Mediterranean have shot down a third ballistic missile that was fired from Iran towards Turkiye, according to the Turkish Defence Ministry, adding that it was asking Tehran for clarification, as the United States and Israeli war on Iran reverberates further west.

The missiles increasingly pose a test for NATO member and Iran’s neighbour Turkiye and the alliance itself. Ankara has warned Tehran against any more attacks.

NATO confirmed the latest development. “NATO remains vigilant and stands firm in its defence of all allies,” NATO spokesperson Allison Hart ‌said.

NATO air defences shot down the first Iranian ballistic missile fired at Turkiye on March 4, followed by the shooting down of a second Iranian missile on March 9.

Do you mean "the Straits"? :laughga:

If so‚ Turkey cannot unilaterally close them to any country because they have a special status within maritime law. They are not a national belonging of Turkey and more of an internationally-open sea corridor.

This could be a false flag, but idk given how Iran can act. This would be a dumb move on Irans part since Trump trying to ally with the Kurds would actually be a great way to alienate Turkey. Attacking Turkey would throw a wrench right into that.

Eh, if my high school memory serves me right, it’s just that maritime trade can’t be blocked at Turkish Straits and no navy belonging to a country w/o a border to Black Sea can navigate for 3 weeks max. Also Turkey can shut down or choose which ships may pass in case of war. It’s not an international zone, it’s sovereign waters of Turkey but we don’t charge trade vessels (cuz they still pay for a Turkish guide captain to navigate the straits). Turkish autonomy over the straits was a huge issue that got resolved during the interwar period by Montreux convention.

OT: It would be very dumb for Iran to get Turkey involved in the war. There’s like 20M Azerbaijani/Turkish speakers in Iran and I don’t expect them all to be aligned with the Mullahs, considering they are targeting Azerbaijan as well. Israeli far right is also pressuring Netenyahu on being openly hostile towards Turkey, and Erdogan doesn’t want the regime to collapse at all so I don’t even know what they are thinking. The base Iran tried to hit is just a 30min drive from my parents’ house so I hope it doesn’t escalate further.

Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?
