Ziggy 12,938
No because she also was Coachella and tour creative director where her vision also translated to sets like the dress. She was hired to make a well-paced show. It's smart. HUGE showstopping opener that grabs attention and photographs to promote the show without revealing too much. The sandbox is another point. I think she did a great deal for the era but they showed some wise restraint throughout to draw your eye in certain places and make them have maximum impact. In the past, Gaga has sometimes let moments that should have been more impactful fall into relative obscurity because she wasn't being cognizant of how to strategically draw attention. Everything existed on the same plane of attraction, but when that happens, there's no plan or direction. But look at Mayhem. This era has been an incredibly huge strategic success for Gaga in ways it really shouldn't have been by all accounts. And it's because they strategized how to build and sustain visual impact first from the Abra video then to SNL, Coachella, Copa, then the tour and NOW that incredible grammys performance and requiem. This has been incredibly well-done so, no, I didn't expect more. Parris was utilized very very well this era and its success shows that. No shade to the dolls, but you can tell many of them don’t really have any practical or logistical sense of how live performance works We have forgotten our public MANNERS 1

She’s mostly stationary and chilling in a suburban neighborhood. It just doesn’t feel nearly as sinister as the moodiness and grime of the crypt. And the writhes are better. Perhaps because it’s not just her laying on the hood of a car (though that is my favorite part of the video). I find choosing the suburban daylight setting to be more unnerving and cool tbh. The image of the Mistress in the middle of the street surrounded by all the houses is way more evocative than some dark, spooky crypt because it demonstrates Ga being in this sort of staid and steady life by her own design and then her demons chasing her to disrupt it and break it. Kind of walking towards the aesthetic realm of David Lynch (i say walking towards bc she's by no means in it in any way but he was long fascinated by the dark heart of suburbia-type stories following after Frank Capra) 2

But I think it’d be more interesting if they pushed it further. More sterile. Or the opposite direction and go Stranger Things with the horror happening while everyone is living their normal lives around it. It just sort of feels like it was filmed on an empty filming lot to me.

"the disease video would be better if we saw a suburban mom do her dishes while it happened" girl this is not a katy perry video

I just think the colors are too optimistic and none of the “horror” elements are juxtaposing enough to make it interesting.

gagzus 18,017
I think people on here sometimes forget that a choreographer doesn’t mean dance teacher, choreography is any form of pre planned and directed movement set. Disease has it, the tour has it ALL her videos have it to some degree. Parris also is aware of Gaga’s health and what she can and cannot do which I think helps. I like the changes she made to pre existing choreo as well on the tour to make it easier for Gaga and the dancers. 1
