California releasing criminals from prison

David Funston, who abused multiple young children and was supposed to spend the rest of his life in jail, is now among many granted release under the California Elderly Parole Program (anyone over 50). I'm not in America but over the past few years I keep seeing things like this or criminals constantly being let off with violent attacks only to continue doing it again such as the old woman who was recently blinded and the boy who has his throat sliced.

Does it feel to anyone else that purpotrators are being treated better than they should? Are victims and potential future victims just collateral damage?

Disgusting that he was let out. Nobody who was committed such awful crimes should be released IMO.

And over 50 is considered elderly?! :bradley:

Its done to cut costs.

Older prison populations cost the state money. Increased healthcare costs etc.

Releasing them into the community reduces the cost.

Indeed. 50 ?? These guys become harmless when they turn 50 ?? Maybe start thinking about it when they hit 70,

The number 1 active criminal on the planet turns 80 in four months time.

No, they don't become harmless after 50. They start harming the state treasury's admin accounts, so they're released to do even more harm to communities who will invariably absorb the financial and psychological costs instead.

If there was some rehabilitation screening I'd get the idea but if they're just releasing over 50s irrespective of their rehab progress then what's the point in any of it?

Just seen another one of a man who killed a 17 month old, and has been sentenced to probation and curfew, no jail time

I’d rather they stay locked up and being a burden to the tax payer than end up homeless on the streets being a burden to the tax payer. I’m old fashioned I guess.

is the quality of health care that good in prison to be that expensive... keep him locked up! release non-violent people (but if they i.e. scammed 100 people and 5 of them killed themselves bc financial ruin, stay locked up)

California creates more Republican voters every time they do this. There’s nothing that fires people up more than being lenient on violent criminals.

The quality isn't good but the responsibility is the issue.

In prison, they have significantly more legal requirements to provide medical care at cost.

In the community, a lot of those legal requirements placed on the state and private prisons are lessened and the cost is referred back to the individual or federally funded routes.

And equally - centrist democrats like Newsome take these liberal policies forced on them by the electorate and deliberately enact them in ways that undermine them. Because this allows them to combat left wing democrats at the ballot box through combining the centrist bloc with the right wing voter bloc.
