I mean, tbf, she never fully embraced chamber folk/folk pop (except for maybe Safe and Sound on Red) until folklore + evermore. Love her or hate her (I think she’s pretty overrated, tbh), but you can’t deny that she absolutely ushered in a newer era of girly confessional pop.

It wasn’t really on release. Some were taken back by the shift from the country/country pop genre to the pure pop genre. Then you always had members here who found her music basic regardless or geared towards a younger teen girl audience. Folklore is the only album of hers universally appreciated among fans, critics, the GP and even her haters gave her merit for it, hence its also her most critically acclaimed album on metacritic (an objective way of looking at what was actually “best received”).
