It reads as disingenuous from that stand point, but I think the music was genuine for the most part. I think people forget she was lost at the time and behind the scenes she probably spent a lot of time with her family. She’d spent YEARS back to back working and non stop touring and finally had time to rest and probably thought about a lot of trauma and that’s why it all came to the surface. We don’t know what her family (specifically what her dad) was like I mean he was literally a borderline alcoholic who nearly died until she paid for his surgery. Families are complicated. I mean even now, yes he’s been publicly republican but we don’t see their relationship behind the scenes. We only see so much, we’re pretty parasocial and forget she has a life outside of the 8 hours we see her do things once a week. she’s literally said the song itself was about what she thinks her dad would say to his sister if he saw her one last time properly as an adult, and she has said he was a tough parent and she thinks it’s because of him losing his sister. Generational trauma is a real thing. Edited February 8 by gagzus

Even Gaga admitted she was trying to do the most unGaga album she could think of because she didn't want to be Gaga anymore Where's the authenticity in that? I agree that it’s very un Gaga. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t authentic. All of the different sides of her, are her. And it is authentic that she didn’t want to be “Gaga” anymore. That was a real feeling at the time. It’s normal for people to have a change of style, and go into different phases in their life. You don’t just automatically find your identity at a certain age of adulthood, and Gaga is especially a different case than most people because she became massively famous at such a young age. It was a transitional period for her and even post Joanne era, the dynamic of her presenting herself as Gaga has permanently changed, as she no longer gets lost in her work. As much as everyone wants to deny it, she is a mixed bag just like the rest of us.
TheARTPOPball 1,163
It’s always confusing to me how people label Joanne inauthentic because of the western look she was taking on when She spent the fame era basically emulating grace jones for the first half, latex, platinum hair, sunglasses, obviously a “character” she spent a large portion of the Born this Way era dressed as a biker woman She spent the chromatica era wearing soft punk outfits mixed with street wear. she spent the die with a smile mini era looking like Dolly Parton mixed with a 60s or 70s housewife. she has spent the majority of mayhem dressed in Victorian inspired goth clothing and the next era will also probably have its own styling, and looks that again look different then the rest why do we accept all these “styles” as authentic but we automatically write off a western styling as inauthentic when she has also left all these other looks in the past? It’s quite obvious looking at Gaga’s discography that she is the artists that tries every look and every sound that she can package as a pop centered record. Simply because of what we know about Gaga. Firstly we can easily see that the Fame & Mayhem era fashions are characterisations. We're not looking for authenticity. Because we know Candy Warhol/Mistress of Mayhem are concepts. As for her dressing in biker leathers or cyber/techno punk looks. They fit everything we know of Gaga - before she blew up and she was Rivington Rebels she dressed in leathers etc. She's never been shy about her rock/alt rock/post-punk influences. Country & Western/Americana/Folk is not something she'd ever really given much public recognition of as something she followed. And we know at the time she & her management were deliberately seeking to soften the public image, and the industry was looking to copy Lana Del Rey. So I think its natural to say that the music concepts of the era were authentic, but the imagery was inauthentic cosplay. And as a fan of the genres she tried to explore on Joanne, I'll never believe she was a lover of those genres. Because I've seen the music she makes referencing music she does publicly reference as influential and it is vastly superior to her dabble in country genres. LGAte 538
I literally think she just means she will do her true country album one day. I mean she already has shown more of a country vibe than Gaga ever did that early so it wouldn't be shocking if Chappell delivered that kind of album. To be honest...I think it would kind of suit her voice. I'd love to see her do a song like Joanne.
