As well as the way people fetishize and commodify it. A big example is how foreign tourists treat geishas in Japan. Or how MAGA Stefani spent years profiting off of Harajuku culture. I understand that, but for example, JBieber was never “profiting off” of the black community by wearing dreadlocks also, it is sadly a privilege to be white, that’s for sure, but just because you’re white doesn’t make you the oppressor? And no, just by being white doesn't make you the oppressor. But you do carry a form of positive social status exclusive to your race in western nations. And if you choose to profit from it intentionally then you are becoming part of the opressors. But intersectionality, which is where the concept of privilege comes from, is significantly more complex than that. And cultural appropriation isn't just about PoCs. The clue is in the name. An easy example is; Praising a pop diva for having dreads (see Gaga during ARTPOP) but actively having employers refusing to hire black people for having dreads. White people have to purposely take the time and effort to make (bad) dreadlocks for example, black people do it to protect their natural hair. It goes back to the slave trade hence the name DREADlocks or wearing a Kimono for Halloween to “be Chinese” as a joke without understanding the cultural significance of the garment.
