Eilish, her brother Finneas and their “ICE OUT” pins were on stage to accept the Song of the Year award when the 24-year-old singer went into virtue-signalling mode. The Tongva tribe, the Indigenous inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin known as the “First Angelenos,” had a message of their own for Eilish — whose multimillion-dollar mansion sits on their “ancestral land.” The tribe revealed that the “Birds of a Feather” singer should “explicitly” reference them when speaking about “stolen land.” “Eilish has not contacted our tribe directly regarding her property. We do value the instance when public figures provide visibility to the true history of this country,” a Tongva spokesperson told the Daily Mail. “It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles Basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory,” the spokesperson added. It was the "nobody is illegal, f*ck ICE" part that mattered. That said, I'm sure Billie would love to hear what they have to say. That being said, and in general terms, I think saying "nobody is illegal in stolen land" is dangerous and risky in the long run. Mostly because it would open up a debate about laws not being important and borders do matter for a democracy, or worse: if no one is illegal in stolen land, every single soul is "legal".
