Indegenous Tribes on Billie Eilish's Grammys speech

The Native American tribe that owns the land under Billie Eilish’s Malibu mansion is sending a message to the singer following backlash over her “stolen land” statement during her Grammys acceptance speech.

Eilish, her brother Finneas and their “ICE OUT” pins were on stage to accept the Song of the Year award when the 24-year-old singer went into virtue-signalling mode.

The Tongva tribe, the Indigenous inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin known as the “First Angelenos,” had a message of their own for Eilish — whose multimillion-dollar mansion sits on their “ancestral land.”

The tribe revealed that the “Birds of a Feather” singer should “explicitly” reference them when speaking about “stolen land.”

“Eilish has not contacted our tribe directly regarding her property. We do value the instance when public figures provide visibility to the true history of this country,” a Tongva spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

“It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles Basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory,” the spokesperson added.

While some of the singer’s fans praised Eilish for speaking out, others mocked her for her comment.

Those quotes from the spokesperson don't sound at all like they're "coming for" her. I think the spokesperson worded it very evenly and politely, they thank/acknowledge Billie for saying something while also advocating for themselves, that they'd like their tribe's name put out there.

The amount of MAGA cultists that have been supporting the Tongva people only to suit their narrative when they hate Native Americans is so disgusting.

  • PartySick changed the title to Indegenous Tribes on Billie Eilish's Grammys speech

They didn't come for her and saying they did honestly feeds the alt-right narrative that MAGAs and Nazis are pushing right now against her 'cause she was brave enough to speak some real sh*t.

They'll twist these words and amplify the mutated version to discount an artist while supporting the agency that details and arrests native Americans 'cause they're brown.

And as an aside, anyone coming for her for being well off and living in a mansion while also saying things like "nobody is illegal on stolen land" is very much giving this energy:

These tribal spokesmen simply want to be referred to by name but honestly, the "stolen land" part of Billie's statement wasn't really the emphasis. It was the "nobody is illegal, f*ck ICE" part that mattered.

That said, I'm sure Billie would love to hear what they have to say. They seem perfectly reasonable, unlike this publication using their words to attack a celebrity that said something they don't like :ohwell:

You have a good point on the matter (the image part), don't get me wrong, but I do consider her saying "nobody is illegal in stolen land" out of all things is a hard take knowing what we know.

That being said, and in general terms, I think saying "nobody is illegal in stolen land" is dangerous and risky in the long run. Mostly because it would open up a debate about laws not being important and borders do matter for a democracy, or worse: if no one is illegal in stolen land, every single soul is "legal". I think saying something like "immigrant rights are human rights and those are fundamental" would fit way more

Don't know if this is the correct thread to state this opinion but I still wanted to say it (no need to say I live in Spain but it's obvious that what happens in the USA will affect the rest of us, so)
