What annoys me particularly when it comes to the Grammys is the lack of consistency in their criteria. For example, if Debí tirar más fotos earned the award for its political stance and the current US context, where was that energy for Born This Way, BEYONCÉ, Lemonade? All 3 albums had the cultural impact, the political stance, the industry push, etc. and yet it was the "musically superior" ones that won over - 21, Morning Phase & 25. Sooo where's that energy NOW when MAYHEM is the one that's all about mastery in the musical aspect? It's like Gaga got screwed by the generational shift that happened. I feel like MAYHEM would've won 15 years ago, while now the new generation is trying to "right the wrongs" of times past by recognising the cultural impact. On Bad Bunny - guys, please help me understand. I just don't see the appeal. I've tried listening to the album multiple times and it's just mediocre. Where's the impact? I know some Spanish, I'm a Spanish teacher so I don't have the language barrier, but maybe the cultural one? I just can't stand his enunciation. I liked stuff from J Balvin back in the day, I appreciate Camila Cabello's Familia. I love Shakira. Rosalía is an absolute beast. But how do we put Bad Bunny next to them? For me, he's the Migos of music in Spanish. So yeah... I'd appreciate your take on what makes this album good or at least listenable. As a Mexican im baffled, even most of the people i know are mad at the grammys rn and yes hes is NOT respected here, popular? Yeah but only like by trash people/teenagers/kids he is the lowest of the lowest musically, i even saw tv presenters clowning gaga for saying “he is a great musician” when SHE i, not him.. he cant sing, perform, dance, play inteuments, writes trash mysiginistic “music”.. i hate how some of y’all defend this just because omggg spanish music, go latinos im so sol wokee look at me like NO, we have lots lf talented artists in latin america, and bad bunny i nowere near close its insulting when gaga called him a “leader” i mean, he is just jayZ pupoet atm used to annoy trump.. How so? It wasn't on the original edition and I don't think anyone outside the fanbase even knows it. Its views are really good all things considered and I heard it playing in a perfume shop today, of all places. 23 hours ago, HotLikeMexico said: Having "knowledge" in the Spanish Language and Latin Culture, while saying you've heard better latin albums and using Rosalia as your example... is interesting to say the least. Especially when it's been very highly discussed how she would win latin awards and be in latin categories, when she's not Latina. But back on topic, no matter what I say, nothing will change your mind about why Mayhem lost. That already is a bias. It's a stupid argument because so many people have made up their minds. Mayhem lost, and nothing is going to change that or rescind the award. I love Mayhem, I genuinely do, but I knew going in it probably wasn't going to win and prepared myself for that. Unfortunately Mayhem went against heavy competition. If Bad Bunny didn't win, Kendrick was going to win, or Sabrina, or Tyler the Creator or whoever else was nominated and it'd just be the same biased or nasty discourse towards these artists, especially towards the POC artists. I'm using Rosalia as my example as her album is the most recent and the most relevant right now and will be a hopeful contender at the next Grammys. "Latin music" is an umbrella term for all different kinds of music that originated among Spanish speakers. It's a term that encapsulates every kind of regional music sung in Spanish by Spanish speakers. We need umbrella terms to give quick categorisations for albums and Rosalia's albums are a mixture of genres, most notably, flamenco, RnB and reggaeton and she always brings a Spanish flair to whatever she sings. I'm hardly going to list all those genres divided by slashes every time I mention an album of hers. Bad Bunny's album has 8 genres listed for it according to Wikipedia. No one is going to list all those when talking about what kinda album it is, so "Latin" covers it all. Most people call Gaga "pop" even though she embodies different genres and inspirations in her work but pop will do. It'll be hard to say how LUX will be categorised if she gets Grammy noms but any majority Spanish songs will I'm sure be put under Latin. Is there disapproval from the Latin population and artists that Spanish and Portuguese artists can be submitted for Latin music awards? But the award is moreso for the genre, not the nationality of the artist and I thought the criteria was just that you had to sing in Spanish and have it be rooted in regional music. There's a reason why Selena Gomez didn't get nominated for a Latin Grammy until she made a Spanish language EP. I could also say that nothing I say to you will make you change your mind about why Mayhem lost. I don't think I've ever inspired you to change your mind on anything. But agreed, whoever won would've resulted in the same discourse. But we're Gaga fans, we're allowed to be mad that our fave lost again. It's really not that deep. I never condone hatred towards artists for their ethnicity, my critique is solely aimed at their music and I really dislike when my genuine intentions are viewed as anything other than a love for music critique.
