Ive been watching this video, and feeling so frickin' nostalgic for this period of being a Little Monster

There was no concern for the quality of vocals or general sound at all. Just all-out full-frontal authentic sound and art.

Amazing era, i was 16-17 back then and was so scared that she damaged her voice, then suddenlu she sounded heavenly at the Vmas/SNL>TFM era
then seh was kinda hoarse when alejandro came out, i love how she takes care lf her voice better now!

This performance means a lot to me, right next to the paparazzi acoustic one she played around that time. I watched this early 2009, I was 17, and not only this made me become a little monster for life, it made me realize I wanted to be a pianist. By the end of that year, I spent all my savings on the best keyboard I could afford, and later on started taking piano lessons to be able to play like that. The mix between pop and classical music made me obsessed like nothing ever did before. I can say now that I'm a pianist today, mostly because of this performance :traumatica:

🎼 It's dark but just a game. 🖤🎧

The Summer 2009 super low and hoarse voice has ALWAYS intrigued me.

Just Dance live on Dancing With The Stars is another example of the full weight of said lowness of her voice.

Like, how did she sound like that, and then magically sound the best she had ever sounded (almost like a completely different person) to date by September 2009 at the VMAs? I’d love to ask her about her vocal journey, and how her voice has changed over the years.

and yes, as @FameHookahmentioned, her voice did occasionally dip back into it throughout The Monster Ball.

also, on the topic of the thread, “Fooled Me Again” is my DREAM surprise acoustic song at the Mayhem Ball. Legit, if I had barricade seats at the piano, I’d have a sign begging her to play it. Now THAT would be an insane fan b-side surprise :enigma:

Some people said that she got vocal cord surgery like sia/adele miley

but idk she never properly rested so.. i dont think that was the case

like she was on tour, recording TFM etc

paparazzi at the vmas/spechless at that vevo event/bad romance )all of the first performances) sounded so clean BRIGHT and crisp, when she used to lower they key live few months before.

its really a mistery to me.

She had severe vocal damage (likely) due to drug use. Lady Gaga has revealed consistently that she did severe drugs in her early career (~2007 - July 2013), so that is the only likely possibility.

The evolution I like to use:

Pre-damage

Early damage (starting in October 2008 you could tell that something changed as her voice consistently sounded "heavier")

Middle damage (admittedly January 2009 isn't the best showcase because she clearly was sick during this month, but there is where someone without a trained ear can more noticeably hear a difference)

Worst vocal damage in March 2009

----

Early healing (Notice how by May 2009 she isn't straining quite as much, and certain parts of songs sound "smoother")

Noticeable healing (V Festival in August followed by the VMAs is the strongest example of this; note how comfortable she starts to sound here with different notes as well as experimenting with different riffs)

(with the VMAs I would also reccomend listening to some fancams as MTV autotuned her performance; for example, she actually went flat during the build up to the first high note in the second chorus)

----

I tend to end this here because this is where her eating disorder kicked in which threw off her vocal changes. She became very nervous and low energy which caused her to develop bad vocal technique. This is why she sounded very uncomfortable during the Monsterball 1.0 and early Monsterball 2.0 and other performances around this time like SNL. I assume personally that the deeper more strained sound from mid-2010 was due to this combined with her possibly being exhausted, though it doesn't explain why she started sounded better (more Born This Way era-esque) come late-2010.

Trying to tell when her voice fully healed is hard because of her changes in vocal technique (starting due to her eating disorder) and vocal styling (starting with the "Dope" voice in 2013). My best guess is that she probably was fully healed sometime in 2011 - 2012 and definitely by the time the ARTPOP era started, though it should be noted that severe drug damage can't always fully heal itself.

might not make sense at all especially where she's at in her personal journey and career nowadays, but i would totally love to have her release old ballads/or rework them into newer projects/a ballad album. even just a surprise performance a la brooklyn nights would be such a nostalgic and electric kiss (hehe) to the fans. if i could time travel, it would be to watch her older performances live when she was just starting to blow up.

I know it was a bad time but I kinda miss when she was off her face singing with a hoarse voice. The first time I ever saw her live was at Glastonbury and the way she was clearly on molly and managed to do the best performance of the year vocally and visually. Diva behaviour.

Yeah she was in a VERY bad place health wise but that was what made the whole mistique of “Lady Gaga” Work

now thats shes been sober you can tell

She still slays tho, Mayhem reignited that fire in her (without the drug use of other eras) thank god!

Yesss! I wasnt a fan of how she sang Poker Face 2010 onwards (but now she nails it along with the high note songs too!)

she also had some damage back in the vegas residence days (shallow era) she struggled at the oscars and now she belts it out like nothing, im glad she knows how to work her voice like that, usually other singers completely lose theirs.

also her vocals during 2013-2015 ughh heavenly

stanning her its like being a fan of 818191 artists at the same time (from faces, hair, fashion, GENRES, acting, personalities and most importantly VOCALS) haha its so magical how can she sound so different from song to song even on the same albums.

This one and Second Time Around always bring me to tears. Also, seeing her play the piano the same way today as she did almost 20 years ago is so special.. she might not put the heel on the piano anymore, but the way she still gets so excited, not able to keep her legs still.. she was the same just a few months ago when I saw her play MTN 😭

I mean I’m almost the same age as her and as a “proper” adult or whatever people call it, I understand her. She was living out her delayed childhood for sure at the time.

Mayhem and Harlequin are the first albums and eras that give me the vibe of what I fell in love with her about tbh
