ARTPOP Act II Lore

Following the recent Harlequin Q&A, it got me thinking about ARTPOP Act II.

She interestingly admitted they allowred the lore surrounding the performance to build, ultimately releasing it as a Christmas present...

Among Little Monsters, ARTPOP Act II isn’t just an unreleased album, it’s a ghost that still walks the halls of Gaga’s career.

The way many of us see it, ARTPOP never really ended. It fractured into many broken mirrors.

After 2013, Gaga didn’t abandon ARTPOP because she stopped believing in it. She stepped away because the world around it collapsed. The era was chaotic, messy, brilliant — and behind the scenes, deeply controlled. A huge portion of ARTPOP’s unreleased material was created while Troy Carter was still steering the train, and that matters more than people inside the fanbase realise. Those sessions, those demos, those near-finished tracks? They’re tangled up in management-era contracts, ownership splits, and creative approvals that Gaga no longer has clean access to.

That’s the quiet truth many Monsters whisper about: it’s not that ARTPOP Act II doesn’t exist — it’s that it exists in a legal and emotional limbo.

There’s also the title itself. ARTPOP isn’t just a name; it’s a brand, an era, a legal entity. After the fallout with Troy and the restructuring of her team, the title became radioactive. Using it again would mean reopening old agreements, old power dynamics, and old wounds. Gaga doesn’t want to relive that version of herself — not because she rejects it, but because she’s outgrown the cage it was built in.

And yet… she’s never let it die.

You can hear ARTPOP’s DNA everywhere if you know how to listen. In the metallic spirituality of Chromatica, or recently in MAYHEM. In the way she talks about art swallowing fame instead of the other way around. In how she still describes herself as a conduit rather than a product. ARTPOP was about the collision of art and pop until neither could survive unchanged, and that idea is still her north star.

The lore says this: Gaga doesn’t want to release ARTPOP Act II — she wants to reincarnate it.

That’s why she’s been so careful. She’s waiting for a moment where she can continue the story without using the same title, the same contracts, or the same expectations. A continuation that isn’t shackled to Troy-era management, unfinished obligations, or the industry narrative that painted ARTPOP as a “failure” instead of a prophecy that arrived too early.

To her, releasing those old tracks as-is would be like letting someone else finish her sentence.

So instead, she’s rewriting the language.

When ARTPOP returns, and most of us believe it will, it won’t be called Act II. It’ll be something stranger, freer, and sharper. A parallel universe sequel. Same soul, different body. The art still bleeding into the pop, but this time on her terms, with no one holding the keys but her.

That’s why it’s taken so long. Especially after the huge petition seeing over 56,000 signatures.

Not because she forgot ARTPOP.

Because she remembers it too well. 💙🖤

I love the passion you have for this theory, but I have to disagree. She gave up on ARTPOP Act II a long time ago, until fans started asking for it again. She almost gave up on pop music altogether before Mayhem, and - I know fans don't like to hear this - but she kind of admitted she was already tuned out while making Chromatica, barely touching production and just having Bloodpop bring her different versions of the songs to get her feedback.

I hope we get ARTPOP Act II someday if she can revisit the music without the trauma around that era. But I honestly doubt it was much more than a cool idea she had 10 - 12 years ago.

I feel like she'll go into ARTPOP universe once again, but like she said she won't be using the old songs she made and won't label it as ARTPOP 2.

She'll do her recent vision of ART and POP. With new producers, new writing, new experiences, new influences.

I love what you've written but sadly I don't think ARTPOP act 2 exists (or ever really existed) and any attempt to create it would be contrived :ohno:

I have to disagree, AP2 didnt exist but fans held onto the notion that “the grass is greener and she MUST have made something better” after all the behind the scenes stuff came to light. She was prepared to give up and just move on or give up being a musician all together. She became cynical (you can tell by her attitude from 2014-2022) because she was the biggest pop star in the world and was surrounded by Yes-Men who fed her ego and she fell and we can admit that lol her attitude in 2012 alone let’s you know she had a bit of an ego. Some of her old team were taking her money and selling her businesses behind her back (this is why Haus Labs became Haus Labs because Troy sold the original Haus Laboratories label behind her back to COTY outright after FAME- that’s why they commissioned a Black Panther perfume that had FAME’s bottle design Nick Knight made and she barely if at all talked about EDG.)

DJWS kept the demand alive (I mean of course he would he was an Exec Producer on the album and is his most successful product) by teasing and playing snippets and telling us lore. But it sounds like he went to Gaga and she refused to do anything with the unused music.

Gaga, I love you to death... but this makes no sense. You didn't release this footage at the time because Joker became the pun of every joke and it was necessary to put everything linked to it under the rug so it didn't overshadow the start of your new era. And you're only releasing it now because it somehow got a Grammy nod and it's not threatening the success of your new music anymore. No complaint here, but let's be real. There's no lore around Harlequin, everybody had forgotten about it.

More on topic, I don't think ARTPOP Act II is being actively worked on, but she knows there's demand for it so I do think she might revisit it at some point.

A couple of years ago I'd have said that she really needs to revisit ARTPOP and release some of those songs because the nostalgia was making me feel like I wanted her to go back there again. Now with Mayhem I can say that new material will always be the priority and if she's doing songs like Disease, Abracadabra, Vanish Into You, Perfect Celebrity, etc. then it's very fair to say that she's in a much better place to make brand new music rather than revisit those abandoned demos that she made when she was miserable.

Like she said in the Little Monsters Q&A, she's not just going to take a bunch of those demos and put them online (hope she had done this years ago or for the anniversary), but she's probably going to take pieces or ideas of what she had and rework those into something even better. Kind of like Garden of Eden having some Private Audition DNA in there.

My honest guess is that ARTPOP volume 2 wasn't completely assembled but there was definitely a concept she had in mind (most likely behind the scenes) and sadly the circumstances of her life and career at that time did not allow her to see it to become a complete project. I would love to be able to hear so many of her unreleased tracks/demos from when she makes albums- but I agree with comments here and the post that ARTPOP doesn't end and it is showcased by all the things she has done and continues to do with her career. This time, she just doesn't need to label it as the album because ARTPOP is part of her definition.

I’ve never understood the ACT II deniers when she literally said it exists lol

Yeah, I honestly wish she’d just leak some of her old **** and call it a day. I don’t need an official release, I just want good quality access to the material

This is so beautiful, and importantly something that fits in more accurately to what happened during the era and after. Her old management tried to ruin her, and she doesn't want to return to that space. I at least hope that we get some kind of a retrospective reveal of some of the bad things that Troy Carter did similar to what Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Jojo, etc. have done.
