New research into the Sarmatian population in the Carpathian Basin proves Asian ties

The nomadic Sarmatians emerged as a dominant force across the Pontic Steppe from the 3rd century BCE and later established a strong presence in the Pannonian Plain from around 50 CE, maintaining their influence until the Huns expanded into the region in the 4th century.

Drawing on a large-scale genetic dataset comprising 156 ancient genomes from 1st- to 5th-century contexts in present-day Hungary and the Carpathian foothills, new research explores the population history of the Sarmatians in the Carpathian Basin.

The genetic evidence reveals that Sarmatians in the Carpathian Basin carried a small but detectable component of East Asian ancestry, setting them apart from other contemporary regional populations.

Population modeling indicates that these groups ultimately descended from Steppe Sarmatians originating in the Ural and Kazakhstan regions, with Sarmatian communities in present-day Romania likely acting as an intermediary link during their westward movement.

The analysis further identifies two previously unrecognized migration waves during the Sarmatian period and points to substantial population continuity into the Hunnic era, even as a limited number of individuals with Asian ancestry entered the region. Taken together, these findings offer new insights into Sarmatian mobility and clarify the genetic landscape of a population that occupied a crucial frontier zone along the margins of the Roman Empire.

Sarmatians lived in Pannonia nearly a millennium before the Magyars arrived.

Sis I don’t need it in pop terms lol. But yeah I totally forgot Sarmatians were more ancient. I guess Pannonia is the first obvious choice for multiple eras of steppe people because it’s more defensible geography

I actually see it the reverse: Pannonia is vast plains with no defensible positions though out, which meant it was always a place that attracted foreign Steppe populations.

Pannonia is also the westernmost point of the Eurasian Steppe in many ways, the last major stop before the Alps, and it was always a highway for migratory peoples in history (Sarmatians, Huns etc).
