I also think one of the biggest factors is that we live in a post 1/6 world where Trump all pardoned people who committed seditious conspiracy on his behalf. I’m sure a lot of Republicans (understandably) fear getting targeted by deranged Trump supporters if they go against him, hence why whenever they do it, it’s always tepid and indirect. What's sad is most red areas where this is a huge issue, his supporters are the most uneducated and pathetically miserable people who remain (and will remain) incapable of understanding anything further. Because Trump fits that description and "loves the uneducated", he has only fueled their violent and hateful actions. The only "optimism" I hold now is knowing this country is likely going to fail completely/entirely and by then MAYBE, people will snap out of whatever delusion they have that this is okay and normal.
