WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Trump administration to enforce a policy aimed at limiting transgender rights that would restrict sex designations on passports to “male” and “female” based on sex assigned at birth.

The justices granted an emergency request filed by the administration, which is seeking to reverse a policy introduced during the Biden administration that allowed people to put “X” as a gender marker or self-select male or female.

Because it's a distraction. The culture war is used to distract people from the real issues like SNAP, Medicaid, voting rights, etc. Notice how this came out just after the 2025 election wins for the Democrats? It's a distraction. Victimize a group to use a blame for problems so the real issues of the ruling parties governance are exposed.

I have always said that official/legal documentation should have sex and gender and separate portions, because from what I have learned from the community... it is two separate qualities to be respected. Being a former student of medicine, I think documentation that acknowledges biological sex is essential to ensure the best medical care if god forbid an emergent accident were to occur and doctors needed to know how to treat you medically. I also think alongside that (again, from what I understand based off what friends of the transgender community have told me) gender should be included separately so that someone's identity receives the appropriate acknowledgment. Going back to a healthcare example, it is imperative somebody understands everything to give you the best/most proper medical treatment, but there should also be a component where they can understand how you identify and how to address you.

I know this is slightly different, and to anyone affected by this new demand... I am empathetic for the harm it does to the community despite being unable to completely relate because I am not a part of the transgender community. I do wish that the transgender community continues to fight for their rights/spaces as transgender citizens so that it can become its own entity for others to better understand and further respect... and I am always in full support of empowering someone in anyway they want to identify! I just think we (at least in the U.S) need to understand how to properly meet these needs and this current announcement from SCOTUS does not assist anyone.

The last point I want to make is how lengthy progress can take. Thinking specifically in the US (because that is where I am from), there has been a lengthy and ongoing battle for civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, and now transgender rights. Change does not always happen overnight, and what is happening right now is an example of ignorance from authority that reaches the breaking point of anyone being targeted by the authority's attack. For those in the US- we still hold so much freedom taken for granted and we need to use our voices to advocate properly and consistently!

I am always so motivated by comments from people on these threads, and I have such hope that we will come to a point where everything is right! People need to be people, and right now we need to fight for that more than anything!

This is my gut feeling too. I guess it depends on what they want this information listed for in the first place. For example (sorry it's a grim one), if remains needed to be identified overseas, it would be important to know what was the sex assigned at birth.

If it's just for a TSA agent to look at the person with the document and say "yup, this looks like a girl", then that's a whole other story, and I think surely warrants more conversation, not just a blanket ruling that's going to cause frustration and confusion. I don't expect the government to understand the nuances of sex vs. gender identity, but in a perfect world they would.

Thanks for giving an extra view-point/perspective of the notion or point I was trying to make!
