SNAP to run out next month, Trump admin won't tap into emergency funds

The US Department of Agriculture says it will not tap into its $6 billion contingency fund to cover food stamp benefits next month if the shutdown continues, according to an agency memo obtained by CNN. That means that roughly 42 million Americans will not receive critical food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in November, unless the agency shifts its position.

However, when asked whether he would direct USDA to fund food stamps next month, President Donald Trump told reporters late Friday, “Yeah, everybody is going to be in good shape, yep.” The president did not provide specific details.

Trump’s comments appear to conflict with the agency’s memo, which stated that “contingency funds are not legally available to cover regular benefits.”

“SNAP contingency funds are only available to supplement regular monthly benefits when amounts have been appropriated for, but are insufficient to cover, benefits,” the memo says. “The contingency fund is not available to support FY 2026 regular benefits, because the appropriation for regular benefits no longer exists.”

Also, states will not be reimbursed if they use their own funds to pay for benefits, according to the memo, which was reported earlier by Axios.

The loss of the critical safety net program ramps up pressure on Congress to end the federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, by agreeing to a federal spending package. Democrats have said they will not support a short-term spending bill unless it includes an extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Republican lawmakers and officials have blamed the Democrats for the impasse, saying they are harming Americans. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins last week told reporters that food stamps will run dry by the end of the month.

I mean, the reality is the Republicans can legally end this today without the Democrats. 

The Democrats have zero power in this situation beyond a backroom deal to push Democrats to abandon the epstein files motion which I think is the Republicans endgame.

Abandoning the Epstein files and also trying to force Dems to get their hands dirty by voting on a CR that will, in some cases, triple some of the poorest Americans health insurance. Really cynical politics all the way round

And Democrats shouldn't cave on the ACA. What's going to happen with insurance prices is going to hurt so many people.

The faster the public realizes that this is the coup, the better. They've effectively neutered the Supreme Court and also disbanded Congress. They took a page from the Democrat playbook, saying "there's nothing we can do" in order to have Trump remain the only one with any power.

My fear is they will never see this as his administrations fault. They will believe it was the fault of woke-liberal Democrats or whatever other nonsense they are, no pun intended, being fed.

I hate this Jamie Oliver clip. 

Its totally reprehensible trying to convince kids that fast food is bad because it uses the less glamorous parts of animals. We have major issues with food waste in western society and this tory **** tried this dumb ****ing stunt.

I was just gonna say. Dunno that its a faor comparison. Parts we think of as "gross" but arent bad for u, isnt it a good thing we still eat it rather than going to waste?

Its the hypocrisy as well. Like he's a michelin star holding chef, he absolutely uses all those cheaper cuts and gristle and bones etc for various parts of his cooking like making stock etc. 

He's a right wing nobhead who pushed propaganda that poor families weren't treating their kids right rather than focusing on the fact that these **** ultraprocessed foods are cheaper which is a major deciding factor in whether or not poorer families are able to eat.

Some ppl literally can not understand how some basic decisions are not as easy as they sound when ur income to work with is just insufficient

 

I myself did not fully gain sympathy to certain things until my mid 20s (25 to 27 years old) when i went thru a bit of a financial crisis of my own. Suddenly little things that were never a big deal I finally understood why they can be a big deal

 

Not proud that i had to go thru such a hard time to finally understand certain things but... it finally made me understand also why some ppl who never had it hard just dont get it
