When I say conceding to that rhetorical framework it’s more that bc of the US‘s history with macho jingoistic language, I think context matters. In this case, I can tell that when you say secure you don’t mean the Huns are at our doors or something but unfortunately, employed in US politics I think it becomes that. Secure implies it once wasn’t, and that we’re not secure, which is to say in danger. Is that hysterical? Tooootally but unfortunate truth is American politics is pure hysteria atp. Truth be told, idk how to bring us back to some semblance of reasonability and critical thinking in politics bc that question goes so much broader than political messaging and “open the schools” feels almost flaccid atp lmao

I totally know what you mean. That’s something I was wrestling with in one of the earlier comments I made on this thread: how do you bring people back into the fold of semi-sanity when they’ve been so thoroughly propagandized on the issue of immigration? I think you’re right abt context because I was thinking that part of what Sanders was dping here was sort of reappropriating the framing to try to potentially convert and moderate people who might have ambiguous general concerns about “The Border” but might not feel comfortable with Trump’s approach (Dillon, the host of this pod, has surprisingly frequently mentioned how cruel he thinks Trump’s deportation agenda is in spite of being generally right wing). But yeah, I think the oppositional framing of border security implying a period of border insecurity (which has never really been a major problem in modern American history) is problematic, it’s just like…how do you tell people border security isn’t a problem if they’re so thoroughly convinced that it is? And maybe the best way to do that is to try to reappropriate the language to reset the table on the issue, but honestly idfk lmao.

Never forget that Bernie is the reason we have a Trump Presidency in the first place. Bernie's handling of the 2016 primary was abysmal and self-centered. The voter margins in WI, MI, and PA between Clinton and Trump were exponentially lower than the number of Sanders to Trump voters...

...Sanders supporters wanted "Bernie or Bust"....Well, Bernie Bros, this is "Bust". Thanks.

Now let’s not be obtuse lol Bernie or bust was a nominal impact on the election. The truth is his candidacy and Trump’s brought unspoken issues to light that the DNC was ill equipped to respond to bc it would strike at their donor base. the DNC’s handling of him was much worse. They were out of touch as per usual and dismissive to his ideas that were obviously resonant among the voters that mattered (undecided, and left). The reality is that the DNC’s consistent refusal of actually effective messaging that reaches the voters who move the needle for them is why they lost. Why on earth would you blame one man vs an institution that even in this moment is so absolutely inept, pathetic, and unfit to have any semblance of leadership in this country? If the DNC was so equipped they’d rise to this moment. They haven’t and they don’t. They are a sad excuse for leadership in a moment that requires it sniveling and pandering to big ticket donors and throwing who should be their allies under the bus to appease them. Hakeem Jeffries, Schumer, even Pelosi atm are all completely and totally out of touch with the moment and seemingly unconcerned with helping Americans who need it. Say what you will for Sanders’ run, people never felt like he wasn’t at least trying to listen to them which in popular politics you need to have. Who tf thinks Jeffries is listening? Kamala Harris? Schumer? All they do is shut down and evade. Every one of them have no idea how to treat the gravity of the current moment and can only scold over the past like parents telling kids they were bad. Frankly, that’s reprehensible behavior when they are representative officials. If you don’t want to represent people, get out. Again, Sanders isn’t perfect but at minimum people feel he represents their interests and cares about THEIR problems. There’s quite plainly a gravity and urgency to the current moment the DNC doesn’t have. It’s pathetic.

The border thing it’s really a non issue because yes you can say Trump did a better job at securing the border. It definitely can get taken out of context and he should have been more careful about the way he said it.

The tattoo thing… YIKES

Him being like “there’s more important things to worry about” is crazy considering that’s what people who supported Hillary instead of him said during the election and he was critical about that approach the entire time

FYI, Clinton is still a highly unlikeable and unelectable politician.

Even Harris’s loss isn’t as embarrassing. At least Harris lost everything - EC and PV and ran against a former president who had the entire right wing apparatus on his side and drove up the propaganda to levels not seen in decades.

Clinton just lost because people didn’t like her and her brand of Democrat enough.

Eh, I actually think the tattoo thing is likely a non-issue. When they unearthed a lot of his old Reddit profile, he referred to himself as a gun-toting socialist and never once a Nazi. I fully believe a meat head Marine would/could get shitfaced and get a skull and crossbones tattoo without realizing what that specific version was associated with historically.

Harris also was at a steep disadvantaged because she was subbed in last minute, didn’t have the opportunity to hash out campaign messaging during a primary, and had to run on a shoestring platform and barely lost. Clinton had every conceivable structural advantage in terms of support from the party leaders, party apparatus, being able to carve out a very detailed platform, and having much more time to campaign and still lost lol.

and a present enormous problem is that the people running it are vindictive children who salivate at the chance to inflict this violence. It’s an entirely unprofessional mess from the top down. In a sane society, Stephen Miller would never have graduated homeroom and Kristi Noem would be your weird aunt sending unhinged emails from her ranch in SD, and nothing more.

More than anything, it was the optics of just letting people in that did him in. Even if they were legitimate asylum seeking people, Americans wanted to believe the worst of them and it created a hysteria that Americans bought into. But even under Biden, they deporting people left and right and were pressuring Mexico to keep central and South American migrants in Mexico and to militarize their border with Guatemala. The only difference with Trump is that he’s doubling down on the optics of cruelty against immigrants, which makes Americans feel safer, as diabolical as that is.

But just as a reminder, Bernie is far from being an open borders guy. He believes illegal immigration keeps wages lower for citizens, so it doesn’t surprise me that he agrees with Trump on border security. Bernie is probably a supporter of amnesty for immigrants, which would force employers to pay higher wages  and strengthen labor rights across the board.

It’s hilarious how conservatives have been allowed to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to immigration. They’re the ones who exploit the cheap labor and they’re the ones who use them as a scapegoat to pass tax cuts for themselves.

In all fairness I defended Trump this past week.

One of his voters was like “Trump is a saint and WILL go to heaven” and I said “No he isn’t! How DARE you go against his own words!!! Trust Don on this!!”

That’s not the problem tho

The problem is using the phrase “we have bigger things to worry about”. If people have concerns about nazi symbols then it’s completely understandable for people to have questions and raise their eyebrows.

i dont get why yall care if undocumented immigrants come here, when this land is stolen

contrary to popular belief, undocumented immigrants do not get welfare or insurance, they pay almost 100 billion in taxes but dont see any benefits from that. they are just working to provide a better/safer life for their kids. the only ppl screwing over everyday americans are ppl like bezos and musk who literally have enough money to eradicate world hunger, but instead they choose to stockpile hundreds of billions to feed their egos.
