I think most of the fanbase have some unhinged idea of her in their own heads and don't really understand her as an artist, they just see an image. 

The real ones know she never left and the color palette and aesthetic doesn't mean anything as she is and has always been a songwriter first.

"Dark" is such a weird concept for me in regards to Gaga. Her lyrical content has always been dark on any given album, even Joanne in a form. Her music videos are always high concept and Disease and Abra are hella "dark". Her sound design has never been "dark" except maybe Bloody Marry... people just like to complain and complain and complain. Also, hot take, if they want "dark", pop as a genre isn't where you find this. Listen to some hard rock, metal, emo and all their sub genres.

I'm sorry but to me everything in this album screams dark (even though that is a subjective matter, as someone has already said on this thread). And yes, even HBDUWM screams "DarkGa", simply because she embodied the whole project with a dark, misterious aesthetic. I've said this before but Swine is literally talking about a sexual predator (dark topic, dark lyrics, heavy production) and she envisioned the whole project full of color. I could never see that song under a dark aesthetic, nevertheless. 

The problem is some people just want her to be the cunty girl who came up as a crazy b*tch in Alejandro and dressed in meat at an award show every single year, again and again. We are in 2025 and she is 39 now, giving us a new side of her understanding of "dark pop", "nachos" she created (and that alone should give us a hint that there is no objective "dark pop music" cause it's literally her trademark, hence why she's the only one interpretating what dark pop means)

my problem with TDD has nothing to do with being dark enough and everything to do with the chorus dropping off in interesting production that was set up in the verses. its not bad, i like the song quite a bit, but i feel the second chorus needed to feel/sound bigger, and the start of the bridge could echo the sounds set up in the verses. i heard a fan mix that did this and i love it, although without stems its just not that great in quality 

also cannot believe anyone thought disease was too dark lmao i didnt see this its a top 3 Gaga song for me, just perfect

It’s insane how often 1 fanbase has changed its mind based on a warped definition of success (or lack thereof) 2014-2025 from “GP wants ballads/HACGa!” to “GP wants darkGa!” - like she and her team are too daft to see the tempo of her songs is destroying her legacy. Meanwhile, her tours, movies, albums continue to sell out, attract audiences, win Grammys, from Joanne and ASIB to HoG and MAYHEM, etc. 

Fans also hold her to a ridiculous standard of “cohesion” and “quality” since TFM, despite everything before/after showing she has no intention or desire to live in that box. The goofy & campy aspects of MAYHEM and TDD are nothing new. She’s released songs with titles like “ScheiBe,” “Sexxx Dreams,” “Black Jesus | Amen Fashion,” written songs like “MANiCURE,” “FOHL,” “Love Me Right” for albums next to “Jewels N Drugs,” “Americano” and “Babylon.”

Verse+chorus of TDD is similar to songs like Judas, which fans love because of its resurgence in popularity, yet received similar criticism upon release (“chorus is too saccharine!”).

While I agree it’s definitely far from being cheap, I don’t think there’s anything creepy on it.

I’d say that the red eye, vomit scene and make up in general brings out an uncomfortable feeling, kind of giving the edge of creepiness on purpose methinks, given the fact that the location choices brings a lighter environment to the overall chaos.

Im not saying its a bad thing tho, I love that mv very much btw.
