Former FBI Director James Comey, a longtime target of President Donald Trump’s ire, was indicted Thursday on criminal charges in federal court.

The charges came days after Trump publicly complained to Attorney General Pam Bondi that “nothing is being done” about Comey and other of the president’s perceived enemies, who he claimed were “all guilty as hell.”

A senior Justice Department official told NBC News that Comey was charged in a two-count indictment.

Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared to reference Comey’s indictment, without mentioning him by name, as news of the charges broke.

“No one is above the law,” Bondi wrote in a post on X.

“Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people,” Bondi said. “We will follow the facts in this case.”

FBI Director Kash Patel, in his own post on X, wrote, “Today, your FBI took another step in its promise of full accountability.”

“For far too long, previous corrupt leadership and their enablers weaponized federal law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions and severely eroding public trust,” Patel wrote. “Every day, we continue the fight to earn that trust back, and under my leadership, this FBI will confront the problem head-on.”

It's scary how right they were, when I first watched it I thought "They are exaggerating for sure" (give me a break, I'm not American), but it's really happening.

That video should be watched by every American.

Major yikes...to see how BLATANT Trump is going after all his "opponents" and "political enemies" is terrifying

These are the actions of a dictator who feels secure in his limitless power and will ruin anyone who stands against him

These are dark and sad times as a country...

Don't get me wrong: things are bad, fascism is here, it will all only get worse, etc. etc., but per AP:

"The criminal case against Comey does not concern the substance of the Russia investigation. Rather, it accuses him of having lied to a Senate committee in his 2020 appearance when he said he never authorized anyone to serve as an anonymous source to a reporter about the investigation."

This feels like a flex of power and ultimately a nothingburger? I can't imagine any federal judge or jury wants to be on the wrong side of history. I don't want to downplay the severity of this, but a lot of Trump's "wins" have either been struck down or reversed by federal courts. Again, I don't want to downplay the severity of the political moment, and maybe I am being a dumb, naive American, but this feels like grasping at straws.

He can't (yet) act unilaterally to jail his opponents, so this feels like his usual brand of pageantry.

Exactly right. Not to mention that there were internal leaks from the DOJ that basically said that they didn’t think these charges would withstand grand jury scrutiny.

The charges will probably be thrown out before trial

I also heard from co-workers just now (not the most credible source, I know) that they’re only doing this bc the statute of limitations runs out really soon? If true…be SO serious…:icant:

And morons they are, it's entirely likely these charges get thrown out immediately because Trump tweeted out instead of DM'ing Pam Bondi
