I agree that she never really topped this one in terms of weirdness and storyline. BTW era truly felt like it was her most creative and less scripted era also

I agree with this! I really feel like her mind was the most 'open' back then to all her creative thoughts. She made the most unique connections and interesting ideas during that time. Love her stuff now! But it just hasn't itched that same satisfying part of the brain since BTW. That part that goes 'oh that's an interesting metaphor but I get it'. Like thinking of fully embracing your darkest parts and choosing to celebrate life anyway, and calling it 'marrying the night'. Or writing your own 'live life as if every day was your last' anthem and calling that totally free moment before death, and that feel of ultimate freedom 'the edge of glory'. She was really in genius mode back then!

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

The music video was released way before Madonna’s comments though

Wrong, as soon as she teased it at the meat dress VMAs, there were already comments about it

Do you think it has aged well?

No, and i think this applies to the song as well.

The intentions of it will never age poorly. She went in with the intention of making a song that celebrates all different identities and expressions, and that is very commendable.

However, the song's lyrics make use of some words that over time have not aged particularly wonderfully, and outside of that I think she just has better empowerment anthems. Both on that same album and afterward.

It's one of not the least interesting song on the album and the video itself does little to accentuate the song's purpose. There's some cool visuals within it, but that's kinda my point against it. It's a cool visual showcase but does not really support the song it's attached to.

I don't think the video has aged poorly. The song has, but the video hasn't. But I also think the video has aged into being something a little less than it could've or should've been for what the song was intending to convey.

I will never understand why she has a tooth gap at the end and crying

The tooth gap was a reference to Madonna sweetie, and with the crying she was representing her meltdown over BTW being a better song than Express Yourself!!!!! Hope that makes it clear to you honey xo

When I first saw the teeth gap at the end, I thought it was an homage to Madonna. Gaga recognizing and honoring her linneage :worship2:

A few weeks (days? hours? Or maybe she already had? idr) later Madonna herself picks up on the stan war and starts shitting on Gaga and I'm like what the hell? :triggered:

The Madonna hate for Gaga always blows my mind because Gaga is so explicit in her honoring of her inspirations and teachers.

Why wouldn't Madonna feel happy to influence another generation AND be honored for it?

BTW vs ET mv back in the day...

Katy had amazing makeup and hairstyle, but the MV itself looked like Animal Planet Documentary

BTW MV far more superior as whole

I shine more in the dark.
