Defmix100 6,409
I don't feel like he's kept much of his style probably after Sweeney Todd, as in where you can look at a shot and it feels like it could only be from a Tim Burton project. The music video felt like it could have been by anyone and was more something I'd imagine seeing more from early Melanie Martinez or if Halsey had a creepy doll music video 1

GoldenNovember 548
The answer to your question depends on the expectations each one of us had before the MVs release. Those expecting a spooky shortfilm extravaganza are disappointed. As for my own expectations: Looking at Burtons previous work and Gagas MVs so far, I came to the conclusion: From a short, classic music video to an extravagant production, everything is possible. Though I did not expect the latter all that much, as The Dead Dance is associated with a Netflix Series, and as such, did not strike me as a project fit for a G.U.Y. or Marry The Night kind of production, as the intended audience for this project is a spicific one. So when the video dropped, I instantly liked it, as I did not set unreasonable expectations for myself. I love the MV! Anyway, these are just my thoughts. I do understand that people expected more from this, we tend to expect a lot from Gaga. But isn't that a trap we set for ourselves at times? Discussing opinions is kind of a mindf*ck, so lets leave it at that Edited Thursday at 04:40 PM by GoldenNovember It's hard to light a candle, easy to curse the dark instead. 3
Chromanne 1,530
This is neither the fault of Tim Burton nor Gaga. They never promised us a huge budget short film length music video with aggressive choreography. The video is what they intended to make. Rather it's the little monsters that had very high expectations based on some random insiders. I like the fact that Gaga doesn't give a shït about the opinions of little monsters. If she wanted to create a simple mv for DWAS with just her and Bruno singing and then add the song to her album, she would do it. If she wanted the Disease mv to have minimal choreography and more on the creepiness, she would do. If she wanted to have an aggressive choreography in Abracadabra mv, she would do. She doesn't bend down to the pressure and expectations of her fanbase and I respect that. To me, the mv was as good as TEOG mv. They aren't groundbreaking but they are still cute visuals though. darkgaga 5,453
Yes he failed. Watching his films and series he is able to deliver awesome cinematography, and this video is so stiff. The endless shot during the first verse, gaga dissappearing in the smoke. The obvious cut from the opening shot of Gaga and the next one where she “drops” of the wall, but it is a completely different wall. The static camera during the dancing part (which works however with the cuts between Gaga and with and without dancers). The cheap colored lights. The obvious fake moon. Just no… 2
River 117,597
hmm If this post was yesterday, I would have say yes but.. So I turned off the lights and the room was dark, I played it on tv and.. DAMN The video is perfection lol Like totally caught me off guard And so many little Tim Burton details that I missed. The whole atmosphere, the Tim horror humor and cheeky moments. Also the bridge is very Tim-coded. Give it a chance if you're really Tim fan I was so wrong yesterday omg So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy 1 2
lilboyblue 5,421
Yeah, I mean I'm actually fine if the idea was for Gaga to just be dancing through the island with the dolls coming alive. That's not a bad concept. Execution though was poor. He had access to such an iconic landscape and not a single wide shot. Also, framing of the choreo sequence was horrible. Why was he intercutting it with the same exact shot size but just with Gaga dancing solo?? And the random switch to color? Makes no sense. Lots of interesting things he could have done.

However DWAS, even though simple, is shot beautifully. Disease doesnt have choreo, but it works to show the struggle with your inner demons. Abra is a masterpiece and works as being mainly a dancevideo, with dynamic shots and good cuts, and still telling a story. TDD does nothing of that
Controversiaga 11,498
I think we can all agree both the song and the video were unimpressive. But I don’t expect much from Tim Burton. I can’t remember the last impressive thing he did… he peaked in the 90s. i did expect more from Gaga, however. Like I said, both the song itself, and the video are not on par with what we know she’s capable of. Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga” 6

Hadrian 659
I thought it was okay, but it feels like one of those music videos made during the COVID lockdowns. you treated me like a Wanted Man; he made me FEEL like a WANTED man. REALITY 77,150
I’m gonna be honest…I f*cking love Tim Burton and his work, but I think he’s a much better ideator than he is a director. Arguably his most famous work, The Nightmare Before Christmas, wasn’t even directed by him. His style and aesthetic is great, but he’s actually not that good of a director—at least, when it comes to his recent work. The direction on Wednesday isn’t great (it’s fine), but I enjoy the show because I love Jenna in the role and I like being in a “Tim Burton” world. The music video’s cute. I like it the more I watch it, but it is missing a “WOW” factor for me. I think it has to do a lot with the camera work. A lot of the shots were very static and just placed right in front of her. For me, it didn’t do Gaga or the Island of the Dolls location justice. 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔪𝔲𝔰𝔦𝔠'𝔰 𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔫𝔞 𝔟𝔯𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔪𝔢 𝔟𝔞𝔠𝔨 𝔣𝔯𝔬𝔪 𝔡𝔢𝔞𝔱𝔥 2
Borisapillar 9,346
He gave us nothing, they didn't even need to shoot on location. Could easily have been a set or a green screen from what they showed us. 6
RAMROD 109,789
It is an amazing MV, and brings out the goth aspect that is known from his works. Not sure what else y'all are expecting??
