Sunburst slab found during restoration work in Scotland

A medieval "sunburst" slab, discovered during restoration work at the East Church in Cromarty, is now on display, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past despite its crude carving.

The slab features a striking sunburst design with eight double-stranded rays emanating from a central cross, symbolizing the sun’s rays bursting forth. Detailed with two swords and an open book, the slab also includes a three-step Calvary base with a roughly carved square cross at its center, contributing to its rich historical significance.

The slab appears to have lost some of its base. A perimeter margin has been formed by the carving of the area carrying the symbols. The end of each ray swells like a bulb. At the centre, the rays join to form a ring. Inside this there is another ring, and inside that is an area bearing several radial marks. 

Two swords with downward sloping quillons stand on either side of the stem of the cross, the point of each sword just above the first step of the Calvary base. An open book, presumably a Bible, is carved just to the right of the right sword.
