MaybeKermit 4,964
As someone from Europe, we have heard and know about Scientology for ages, but I never understood how it’s still active? is it an illegal party? If so, why is for example - “the president” - not doing anything about it? why does it seem to be known by eceryone, but nothing is done against it? It's a religion so there's really not much you can do.

I think the lines get a bit blurry here to define that i think because most social community groups (including religion) have at least some traits that are consistent with cults. The intensity of it is what varies the most. I think at the end of the day rather than a consensus on what classifies as a cult or not (cuz again i feel there would be a lot of grey area). I think what matters most is to analyze how hard ppl are forced/coerced to stay in the group and harm faced if they want to leave but cant really Clearly Scientology would fit that bill

Not so sure about that honestly loL While listening to this, I couldn’t help but equate most of what she was describing to monks, nuns, Mennonites, etc., and folks have been ok with those traditions for centuries. They’re all the same: man-made rules and narratives to scare and control people. Edited 7 hours ago by MACATL

It depends on what they teach and whether their teachings and actions has any negative impact or are crimes against the law. Major religious preachers themselves criticise and distance themselves from such cults if they're from that particular religion. For this to happen, we should be able to freely criticise the controversial practices of the organised religions.

Scientology is all over Europe though, and its completely legal, the only difference is Europe doesnt treat it like a religion, so they dont get tax exempt. Scientology will punish, harass, and stalk you forever in many ways if you leave the religion. They will use your own family and children by forcing them to cut you off forever. They control every single thing you do in your daily life and have full control of your bank accounts. They also have ways to make it hard for you to leave like not allowing you education or job experiences so you cant survive in the real world. They blackmail their members by using the information your shared with their therapist. And in extreme cases, they will imprison you and beat you for months. Alot of people view Mormons as a cult, but there is no religious authority that controls you, and you can leave and attack Mormonism while still being safe and in contact with your family and loved ones. 4 hours ago, MACATL said: Not so sure about that honestly loL While listening to this, I couldn’t help but equate most of what she was describing to monks, nuns, Mennonites, etc., and folks have been ok with those traditions for centuries. They’re all the same: man-made rules and narratives to scare and control people. But we treat all adults as people who can make choices for themselves at the end of the day, regardless of what their religion say, but scientologist dont have that choice. Thats a big difference, and saying scientology is just another religion is missing the point, and is normalizing scientology.
