Bronze Age fortification discovered in the forests of Northern Romania

Recently, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery using LiDAR technology in the dense forests of Neamț County, Romania. They uncovered a 5,000-year-old fortified settlement dating back to the transition between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

LiDAR, which works by sending laser pulses to map elevation, enabled the team to detect significant structural details hidden beneath thick vegetation—all without disturbing the site.

The LiDAR scans revealed that the ancient fortification was strategically located on high ground and featured complex defensive structures, including long ditches and earthen mounds. 

The project was achieved using entirely noninvasive methods. Drones equipped with LiDAR allowed for an aerial survey of the area, offering a broad and detailed perspective of the fortifications without damaging the site. This approach reflects a growing trend in archaeology to prioritize preservation while still pursuing detailed analysis.

It was swalowed up by vegetation and terrain with time, which made it less visibile to the naked eye. There are many sites likes these all over the world which are just know rediscovered with new technology.
