To be fair, I think a bunch of songs are considered for lead single before the planning for the era is done, Gypsy could’ve been just one of them, not really a big contender

Gaga wanted Aura as lead single, Sex Dreams was supposed to be lead single and duet with Robin Thicke, Manicure had a video planned, Gypsy on the sticker made it obvious it was going to be a single at some point. Venus too before they switched to Do What U Want (the actual better song and most commercial, could’ve been huge). Applause wasn’t even going to make it on the album, Troy picked it as lead, etc. 
 

I’m so shocked that for all the fiddling, NO ONE thought to bump R Kelly off of DWUW.

Because it’s not “easy” listening, basically. Think about it. Abracadabra can be played at home, the club, the gym, car, a walk. It’s a big fun song but widely applicable. Disease is kinda specific.

As much as it was kind of joked about and kind of known in pop culture that R Kelly was a pervert. 

I don't think the seriousness of it had fully entered cultural concious at the time
