Emma 199
I can see some people in this thread think that she'll just return to normal now that she's walked. NO. Doctors always ask the patients to do a few small steps after surgery, if she can do a few small steps without feeling pain she felt before then the surgery was a success. If she was still in pain then something else would still be wrong. She will still take as long to recover and will be using a wheelchair for a week or two before then moving onto crutches so that she can put some pressure back onto her legs again. It's all about taking baby steps. Took the words right out of my mouth. I know it sounds weird since I don't walk at all, but the same thing (just getting out of bed) still apples. Nothing is "forced." After you have a surgery like that, you're supposed to take baby steps to get that range of motion back/build up a pain tolerance to weight baring. Katie14 4,828
I know, but she has the genetic predisposition for it meaning that it can 'activate' at any time if she doesn't take care of herself (in the same way that people 'carrying' diabetes can expose themselves to it if they eat poorly & don't exercise). There are certain diseases that you can be a carrier for but I don't think lupus is one of them. It is unknown where the gene for lupus resides. Being a carrier means you have the genes for a disease but another gene is preventing the disease from manifesting. For example, if a disease is recessive you would need to possess 2 copies of the recessive allele in order for you to have the disease. If you only have one copy of the recessive allele, you have another allele which is dominant. The dominant allele is then expressed and you will never get the disease. But, you can still pass the disease along to you kids (if they end up with two recessive copies, 1 from you and 1 from the other parent) even though you aren't expressing it yourself. Lupus and diabetes can be hereditary but that only means that you have a higher chance of getting it than someone who doesn't have those diseases in their family. Lupus runs in Gaga's family but that doesn't automatically mean its in her system waiting to be activated. It may not be in her system at all. She may not have acquired the lupus gene or she may have a dominant allele preventing it from being expressed. "Relatives of people with lupus have an approximately 5-13 percent chance of developing lupus. However, only about 5 percent of children will develop lupus if their mother has lupus." Also, being tested borderline positive doesn't mean she has lupus in her system. There are numerous other autoimmune diseases that can make the test come back positive or borderline positive. "My Doctor said my lupus test came back "borderline positive." What does this mean? The screening test for lupus is called the ANA (antinuclear antibody). All lab tests have normal values. If a test result comes back and the value is at the upper limit of normal, this is often referred to as being on the border or borderline. These results are often very difficult to interpret; and the assessment of its importance is dependent on meeting other criterion. It is likely that a borderline positive ANA assumes more importance if other criteria are also present. " But none of this matters anyway because Gaga said she doesn't have it. Shadow 6,490
Wow, that was quick. She's resilient, might be heal faster or is better off than originally thought. Of course, she has access to the best health care money can buy. Either, I'm glad she's getting back on her feet, literally. :) Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people. -Carl Jung

AyaKara 2,281
I am studying Bio in uni so I do know all of that first part, thank you though :) I figured, since Gaga always said she was 'borderline', that it meant she either had it & didn't 'activate' it yet by not taking care of herself, or she was a carrier & could make it come about eventually (like diabetes or cancer -- you may only be carrying it, but environmental factors can still cause it anyway, much in the way that environmental factors can cause diseases in people whom don't have genes for the disease at all). & since lupus doesn't seem to be a disease that you can carry (though I think it could be if Gaga's parents don't have it & she can have it), then it must be that taxing her body can make it occur. Either way, Gaga herself did say three years ago that to prevent it she needed to take care of herself or she could make that borderline go overboard -- so I assume that this is the same case. She may not have it right now, which she didn't back then, but she can be borderline if she doesn't take care of herself, which is what I was saying in my original post
