The actress was seen in multiple videos seemingly praising her "genes" in what appeared to be a cheeky denim pun for the brand's "jeans" campaign.

In one of the ads, Sweeney says, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color... My 'jeans' are blue."

After the ads went viral, many netizens were quick to criticize the campaign, claiming it had racial undertones, promoted white supremacy, and aligned with Nazi propaganda.

Experts are weighing in on Sydney Sweeney's silence amid mounting backlash over her American Eagle denim campaign.

The actress's decision to remain silent has been described as a "toxic time bomb" that could damage her wholesome image.

Despite the controversy, American Eagle's stock has surged since the campaign's release, prompting a company spokesperson to publicly praise their collaboration with Sydney Sweeney.

People do know that she didn't write the ad right ? I'm not justifying her, because she still chose to do it (and that brings up the issue of the contract with the brand and wether or not she had access to the script beforehand, and wether or not that same contract allows her to make a statement), but the anger seems to be slightly misdirected

Dunkin also just released an ad with a white dude talking about his genetics. Feels weird. Kinda feels like more nazi rhetoric getting normalized.

And Sydney didn't write the script but with how she treated the family bday party drama and the bath water soap collab? At BEST she's playing into the right wing crowd for a bag. Not great to see.

I’d recommend seeing it just for the pure comedy.

If these were different times I’d say, ok I get it. But when fascism in the US is rising and racist ideology making a comeback an ad like this rubs the wrong way.

People, that's how propaganda works. You don't see the problem.

A white, blonde, beautiful woman talking about having great genes in this day and age should ring a bell.

Drop it

In what way is this problematic :ladyhaha:

The tagline is ‘Sydney sweeney has good genes’ but then it’s crossed off with ‘jeans’ instead. Feels very eugenics/N*zi rhetoric screenshot_2025-07-29_214519.png?w=608&a

I’m sorry but I really think people are reaching with this one and trying to link it to some rhetoric that it isn’t. It’s just a play on words? I don’t understand this obsession with trying to find ways to be offended, do people not have good discernment anymore?
