It's an excellent song. I;ve heard from a lil monster friend and a rando that they feel uncomfortable with the words. As do I! I don't think people would play that one. I don't think it's a majority of people holding this opinion, an opinion that is absolutely valid of course. Drop it

AVeryGagaHolyDick 31,306
Just Dance being much bigger than Paparazzi will always be a mistery to me. Like back in the day, okay, Bad Romance literally cut Paparazzi’s legs, but now? Don’t get me wrong, Just Dance is a great dance track and deserves every bit of the success it has, but Paparazzi? It’s so much more unique and yet it sounds easier for the GP to swallow because it’s softer and it has that beautiful melody… The human race is just in awe when they ear “promise I’ll be kind”, it’s proven scientifically. Paparazzi has a better video (less strictly iconic than Just Dance, I’ll give you that) and THE deeply iconic VMA performance, and somehow it’s just become “one of her hits.” Judas ended up getting its well-deserved flowers, but Paparazzi is just out there, wandering somewhere in the past and I don’t understand why… But after all, Gaga’s probably okay with that given who produced the song, and her reimagining of the song at the MAYHEM Ball further suggests that, but I still don’t understand the public’s habit to under-consider the song.

Quartz 12,756
Judas is more offensive than Born This Way but it's getting really good streams. The world just needs to stop sleeping on Born This Way. It's a really good song. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

And BTW is not offensive I mean, tbf, referring to Asian people as “oriental” has been offensive for the better part of a century and “chola” isn’t wholly offensive as much as it’s a bizarre term to include in a list of national and racial identities, as it’s more of a style/subculture (and it has a negative racial connotation when used by white people going back several hundreds of years). I don’t think any of this outweighs the positive message of the song, but I also don’t think it’s fair or accurate to say that people taking issue with those terms is a byproduct of reactionary PC/“safe space” culture. It bothers people enough, or makes people uncumfortable enough, to stimulate these conversations though. In the context of a hit song --- if it brings up these feelings in some people, it will impact the success of the song. It would be pragmatic to update the lyrics, I feel, as it would allow more people to listen to the song without the discomfort and potential offense these words bring in people. Of course one can argue about wether the song is offensive or not, I'm just saying change the lyrics so people are more likely to listen! I agree. But this is also what I mean when I say her word-vomit style bridges and verses sometimes don't work well. "Black white beige?? chola?? descent your Lebanese?? your orient??" Very clunky and awkward, irrespective of the misguided word choices. Where she excels at is the music itself (melody, chorus, hooks, chords, etc.)

Where she excels at is the music itself (melody, chorus, hooks, chords, etc.) just to correct you about the "clunkiness" of the bridge, she says: You're black, white, beige, chola descent, you're Lebanese, you're Orient. Not your, and each comma functions as an "or", as in you could be any of those - you're still beautiful. JohnPokerface 205
I feel like based on songs from BTW that gone viral this decade (BM and Judas) BTW the song is just not the type of music people want to hear from Gaga or feel nostalgic about. It's more about the message and less about the vibes. We don't have any new big songs with the similar message.
