Republicans block release of Epstein Files

House Republicans on Monday night voted against attaching a Democratic amendment to landmark cryptocurrency legislation that would force the Justice Department to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Why it matters: It's the outcome Democrats anticipated, and one they plan to gleefully cite as President Trump continues to grapple with the MAGA fallout over the DOJ's handling of the documents.

"The question with Epstein is: Whose side are you on?" Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the author of the Epstein measure, told Axios ahead of the vote.

"Are you on the side of the rich and powerful, or are you on the side of the people?" he said, promising to introduce the amendment "again and again and again."

What happened: The House Rules Committee, which prepares legislation for votes on the House floor, voted 5 to 6 against attaching Khanna's amendment to a procedural measure related to the GENIUS Act and a defense funding bill.

So, why are Republicans blocking Ghislaine Maxwell from a plea deal?

Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell is ready to reveal client list https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14901591/Jeffery-Epstein-Ghislaine-Maxwell-trump-congress.html?ito=native_share_article-nativemenubutton

There's far more to Trump and Epstein's relationship...

What do they have to hide?

Dems could play this up until midterms...  Even Elon and Tucker have been at odds with Trump lately.

Would Democrats really benefit from having it released though? Imagine some prominent past Dem leaders are mentioned. Republicans will just spin it to their base that Dems are evil and that's all they'll care about. I truly want every single person involved to face justice, but I'm more worried about further polarization of the parties and the resulting political outcomes.

trump, clinton, and countless other people in powerful positions past and present will be exposed if this ever happened. i can't see it ever seeing the light of day. it would literally cause mass unrest. from what i'm seeing in comments and speaking to people about it, it's good that there's one subject that can bring all sides together. imagine the power of the people if everyone united... but i suppose that's the aim of politics, especially in america. keep the people divided and distracted.

It really feels like it doesn't matter how evil you are or what depraved things you do, nothing has consequences if you have money

Hope this continues to tear apart the orange monsters base, it’s nice to watch the s*** show occur, but Democrats need to jump on this and for crying out loud like Obama said recently, stop sitting on the sidelines in the fetal position, and come out with a clearer vision of how they want to change things and work hard to recoup the coalition.

The dems knew that Republicans would block it. That’s the point. This is so that MAGA and other republicans clearly see who is stopping the release of these files

My tuppence worth of speculation ....

Both the GOP and the Dems have people who could end up in jail if the files were released, and that means that they won't ever be released (or at least not until a lot of people have died), because it will always be either the GOP or the Dems who have the say on releasing them. While Biden was in power the GOP campaigned on releasing them, knowing that he couldn't. Now the boot is on the other foot, so it makes sense for the Dems to campaign on it. If the above is true .... it's pretty awful.

Some facts on Donald Trump - not just speculation on my part - actual facts.

1. He was a long-term buddy of Epstein. They partied together a lot.

2. There are several allegations of sexual assault against him. The E Jean Carroll case went to court and a jury found him liable for sexual assault.

3. He is on tape boasting about how you can do anything when you're a celebrity, including grabbing women by the p---y.

In the light of the above facts, my speculation would be that it is likely that Trump himself would be incriminated by the release of the files.

Establishment Dems don't want it released either.

Little stunts like this work because they know it helps push the dial with minimal risk to them. They won't fully commit to this strand of attack because of the risk it poses to some of their big names and more importantly to their donors.

The establishment Democrats are quite happy to sit there and watch because the Republicans are doing a lot of things they approve of but would never risk doing - like the full throated support for Israel, the strikes on Iran etc

The gays know how to party

You’re more worried about political outcomes than the truth being known and justice being handed down?

Dem leaders being on it would give it credibility

Thing is, I don’t see an establishment Dem winning the next election, the AOC’s of the world should run with this and present their vision and lead as she passionately does in the house on how the working class need to be supported. If they are seen to also challenge the status quo it’s a good starting point for the electorate seeing them in a better light, they are seen as pitiful at the moment. I think like Mark Cuban has been saying, they need to play the Republicans at their own game, be brash, promise reform and present intuitive and relatable solutions. It worked so well for Mamdani recently. I do think there is some intersectionality like you say where there is agreement on Iran but they can reinforce their position of how diplomacy is an appropriate solution and Obama’s deal with Iran, although not perfect, moved in the right direction and we knew where the enriched Uranium was. Now we haven’t got a clue which should be a big concern yet it’s completely out of the news cycle. There’s a way to play this well for the Dems they just need to do it and get their approach out there, they are taking far too long. It’s fish in a barrel yet they are making it so difficult for themselves. Plus from a party funding standpoint, donors are skeptical and don’t want to give money until they see progress so they need to get to work asap.
