Kazakhstan Bans Face Coverings, Muslim Women Asked To Embrace National Style

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law on Monday prohibiting individuals from wearing clothing in public places that covers their faces, joining a trend in several Central Asian countries to restrict forms of Islamic dress.

The text of the law says clothing that "interferes with facial recognition" will be banned in public, with exemptions for medical purposes, in adverse weather conditions and at sporting and cultural events.

The legislation, one in a series of wider amendments signed into law on Monday, does not explicitly mention religion or types of religious dress.

Tokayev has previously praised the legislation as an opportunity to celebrate ethnic identity in Kazakhstan, a majority-Muslim country and former Soviet republic.

"Rather than wearing face-concealing black robes, it's much better to wear clothes in the national style," he was quoted by Kazakh media as saying earlier this year.

At least 150 girls dropped out of school in protest at the decision.

According to official data, almost 70 per cent of Kazakhstan's population practises Islam, with Christianity the second most practised religion.

The latest clothing ban follows similar restrictions on face veils by other Central Asian countries. Neighbouring Kyrgyzstan passed a law earlier this year prohibiting face veils from public places. Police in Kyrgyzstan conduct street patrols and raids to enforce the ban on the niqab face veil worn by some Muslim women, according to local media.

Uzbekistan has also banned burqas and veils in public places and imposed a fine of over $250 for any violation. The country has cited security concerns and promotion of secularism as justification for the ban.

Tajikistan passed a similar law in 2023 banning the wearing of any clothing that "contradicts national culture and traditions”.

“Let people wear what they want as long as it’s decent” challenge

Orders like these are just nationalism and police state preparations.

“Security” = facial recognition technology can’t identify you in public

The veil will no longer protect the gorgeousness of their faces.

We always criticize Christianity but not Islam? At the root of it all it’s the same. The face covering is meant to suppress women and has almost nothing to do with being prude. It’s a practice concocted by men in power who wanted to treat women like property since medieval times (and perhaps it was necessary back then for political stability? Powerful men making harems is not uncommon, think Chinese and Greek concubines.). It signifies that women should keep their mouths shut and obey.

I grew up around Muslims and an independent woman is an unthinkable and dangerous prospect.

Do you think I sound cynical? I consider myself rather conservative but I’ve never supported women having their faces hidden. You gays should know what it’s like to hide our selves from the public and pretend we’re straight.

And incase you’re not convinced. Look at what happened to Iran before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution:

Women were attending universities in the 70s, and in 2024, the morality police beat them for dancing in public. You can look it all up.

Be it from some christian, Jewish or Muslims societies, you always have traditions to cover women more than men as if they were indecent by nature so the "decency" bar had to be placed higher for them than for men.

It’s getting tiring when Christianity gets all the **** from the liberal western people but not Islam when Islam is 1000 times worse when it comes to human rights and everything else.

As queer people respecting Islam in any way or shape in my opinion is degrading yourself to the worst point. It is worse than Christianism by far and its believers are the worse and bunch of ignorants who will do anything to spread their religion in every corner.

im Muslim technically and in no shape or form I respect it. Seeing it close by it is by far way worse than any other religion.

But only Islam forces them to cover tho. Come on now.

Yes, I 100% support women to do what they want with their bodies. If they feel the need to cover their entire face because that’s what they wish to do (e.g. because it’s their own personal religious beliefs) then yes, idk why anyone would want the opposite for them? You’re basically advocating for forcing women to do with their bodies what YOU want them to do.

If a woman chooses to follow the laws of Islam, who are you to tell her “no, I don’t like it, you can’t do that!” ???

Your heart is in the right place, but you should consider coming over to Muslim majority countries and see what it’s really like. Once they cover up, it’s a quick decent into loss of rights.

No driving, no owning your own home, no making decisions without a man, no choosing your own future. No abortions and absolutely no gays. Pray you have a good husband because one that beats you will see no repercussions.

I grew up in Singapore, but visited Malaysia and Indonesia quite often. Then I moved to Europe and made some ex-Muslim friends who are from the Middle East. This is our experience.
