Banned Budapest Pride still happening tmrw, huge mess incoming

A couple of months ago Putin’s fave pet, Viktor Orbán and his nazi party banned Pride in Hungary. Budapest’s progressive mayor Gergely Karácsony decided to still organize the event even though he is threatened with 1 year of prison. The police also threatens to fine anyone who dares to attend the Pride tomorrow with the fine going as high as 200000 HUF (around 600 USD).  
 

Orban promised that he wont order the police to beat up the crowd, but at the same time gave out permission for actual neo-nazi organizations to make events near the Pride, and incidents could happen thanks to them interacting. Still, it is expected that this could be the biggest Pride event in Hungary with a crowd exceeding 50000 people.

Please anyone attending this event tomorrow, stay safe and make sure to wear comfortable shoes if you need to make a run for it. You never know in this hellhole of a country.

I wanted to attend, but I won't be able to because of work, but I am still very scared of what will happen. I am more concerned about all the homophobes going into the crowd and doing something terrible... I hope everything will be okay...

I am planning to go tomorrow as I'm traveling to Budapest this weekend, but I'm a bit frightened ngl. Surviving EuroPride in Belgrade in 2022 as a volunteer was an experience itself, as that one was banned as well, but at least we got police protection in the end and while it was very scary especially outside of the "borders" of the protest, at least we knew we were protected by the police. 

How did previous Pride parades go in Budapest for you guys? Did it feel unsafe in any way?

AFAIK Hungary is the poorest country in the UE. And of course their government is extreme right.

Maybe the first couple of Budapest Prides were problematic in the 90’s, but I would say in the last 15 years everything was perfectly fine, only a couple dozen of neo nazi protestors here and there but far from the crowd behind cordons so no one even noticed them really. The police made sure everything is safe up until last year. Then suddenly after Orban’s popularity suffered a huge decline and the Hungarian economy tanked hard, inflation skyrocketed, they tried to find the perfect scapegoats so people wouldn’t care about the real problems in the country. First it was György Soros and the migrants, and now its the EU, Ukraine and the gays. Budapest is actually very progressive and not anti LGBTQ, Ive even seen LGBTQ people holding hands on the streets several times and no one cared. The problem is the countryside where people are very behind and they are extremely poor and having hard times. Unfortunately Orban hopes to earn votes from them with these anti LGBTQ laws, but its crazy how far he went with this to even ban the pride parade.

The police right now is busy with equipping face detecting cameras on the streets so they can send out the fines for the attendees who dare to go. 600 usd is actually a huge amount of money for people here, for some people it’s half of what they earn in a month. Hopefully they will make sure things are safe even with the ban because we never had a major incident before, its completely crazy what Orbán has done to this country in the last couple of years.

Pride is a protest. It's way more important to attend a banned pride than it is to go to a Chase Bank sponsored Pride. Good for them
