Been listening to this a lot lately. Walk of Fame and Every Girl You've Ever Loved are bangerz. I think the tracklist and prono has not sold its strongest elements. On the back of Flowers, a disco record could have been really exciting. I think it's overall good but there are a lot of mild ballads weighing it down.

Hardly out, already forgotten. That feeble feat did nothing to me. I saw it coming. Useless.

And yet, how many bad and even worse releases end up generating huge success instead, it's just beyond me.

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

This is a flop of biblical proportions…

many of y’all blaming the promo / label but I’m sorry to say that no one I have talked to in person about this album has liked it 🙃

a lot of people on GGD definitely like it but elsewhere that is not happening

its such a shame because it is genuinely a really great album! the rollout ruined any chances of it being a hit. releasing prelude first and then something beautiful second, some of the 2 weirdest songs from the album, really killed any hope of it being a success

Trust me, if the album were doing good commercially then GGD would be dragging it to the pits :ladyhaha:

Flowers was a huge hit despite her not having had a proper tour since 2014 – that's 10 years ago. Clearly not touring didn't matter for that song to become the hit it was, and she has had other successful singles and all her albums have been Top 5 since then. A lot of fans also can't afford to go to concerts or tours so an artist not touring doesn't actually have that much of an impact on fanbase. What it does have is an impact on how much money a label is willing to invest into promoting a project. With Flowers, they probably weren't expecting the song to be a smash and it organically became a hit and that gave the label confidence to promote the album (which still was only #3 on the charts, despite being her biggest sales week since 2014). They probably also spent way too much budget on the tie-in film (which never should've been made) and so had less to promote the material. When the first singles failed to become hits, everyone at the label seemingly gave up on the era. Touring really doesn't have that much to do with it.

Flower was a hit because it went viral on TikTok. even unknown artists were able to score a hit with TikTok, for example, Gayle reached top 3 on the US Hot 100 and #1 in the UK with her viral song.

touring is important to build a dedicated fan base, nobody wants to stand an artist who does not perform their songs.

there are plenty of artists I love who either don't tour anymore (Sade) or who I don't want to see on tour (Carly Rae Jepsen). Sometimes music can just be about the music. :laughga: The reality is that touring is needed for record labels to make money and record labels promote artists that tour more than artists that don't. That's the real difference.
