Um. This feels incredibly offensive :rip: I don't think that's your intention but be careful with how you word things please. We don't f*ck with racism here, even accidental racism.

Lord do I miss when our culture wasn’t so dumb and knew when someone made what basically amounted to a PR mistake.

she made merch bc they’re black cowboys. It was short sighted bc of the passage chosen. End of story.

something can be both BAD and also basically just short sighted mistake

No... if you're going to make a prestige album about the history of black country music, please do your research and know what you're talking about. It's clear she's just cosplaying anything she can find that is related to black history (she's done this for years now...). It doesn't feel intentional or artistic, just slapstick.

She still has all of the imagery on her site. It's a bad PR move for sure, but don't be surprised when people criticize you for wearing a piece of history like a costume.

There are TikTok videos comparing her and Taylor swift recent maga hangout. And people are saying if you are offended by Beyoncé’s current situation, then you’re racist… like what..?

So…none of that negates what I said aside from you inserting a weird thing about a Black lady cosplaying as Black and how you don’t think it’s real enough.

but otherwise I agree? What I was saying was that she very obviously was not maliciously rubbing her hands together to find a way to slight native Americans. Still worth critiquing but critique rightly. It was a bone headed and very bad mistake but a mistake all the same.

some people instead chose this as some chance to be like HA SHES ACTUALLY A SUPREMACIST bc they’re weird af. So that’s the point I was making. In the grand scheme of everything going on in the world, waiting with bated breath for a celebrity to make a faux pas is just stupid. I consider this in the same league as Gaga being at that party in germany and posing with the people wearing Black face. I’m going to assume there’s more to it but it looks and is received BADLY. It is in essence a very very bad faux pas and nothing more, though.

there’s real problems with real bad actors. People need to contextualize bad things correctly

Sorry but that first sentence is ignorant. There are dozens of African states, languages, cultures... more black history in the Caribbean/Latin America and even more in the American South. These are distinct histories, not all of which belong to Beyonce, which is why she's been routinely criticized (and admittedly lauded) for taking aesthetic inspiration from each of these belongings.

If you reread what I wrote and visit her website, you'll notice that she's performing as as one of these soldiers (not just wearing a t-shirt with text she didn't read). Don't put on an entire performance inspired by these figures and not expect to be criticized if you are clearly referencing something-- it's as simple as that. If you choose to reference, know the basic facts of what you're talking about. Not a high bar whatsoever.

Claims that she's a supremacist are not the point... those are extreme. But the main point is that artists have a responsibility to educate themselves when they make historical and/or artistic references. This applies to any student, politician, writer, literally anyone lol.
