RenegAde 18,994
Perfect illusion is one of gagas best songs to me, the lyrics especially in the verses are written in the mature tone that most MAYHEM tracks have. Its also vocally one of her best songs, you can just hear how minimal the studio work was on her voice by how natural it sounds. The production is thrilling the build up to final chorus feels like an eargasm. Its truly a shame that this song had a such a mixed reception and largely goes unnoticed within the GP today but i know its day will come. However until then, i feel like a big reason perfect illusion underperformed was because gaga gave up on the vision too soon and it makes sense now because when the album was released it was clear that perfect illusion didnt quite represent the album sound especially for a lead single. The track was just too ahead of its time stuck out like a thumb and sounded nothing like what was trending in 2016. I was listening to MAYHEM and realised how much perfect illusion fit into this album just right between Perfect Celebrity and vanish into you. Try to Listen to the album in order and put perfect illusion between these two tracks especially with a fade out and see how seamlessly it fits. Not just sonically but perfect illusion belongs on MAYHEM aesthetically. The title reads like a line from a poem, painting a vivid picture without using a full sentence which is the same device uses in most of mayhems track titles, using fragmented poetic phrases like vanish into you. 2 1

Ladle Ghoulash 22,462
Ngl I would love to hear Gaga, Watt, and Cirkut give another pass at PI. I absolutely love it and agree it’s one of her best songs, but I feel like they could bring even more to it production-wise. SHALLOW 16,252
I didn't think of it as i don't often listen to it, even though i like ot, but yeah it fits. Except we already have Perfect Celebrity which gives a very similar vibe and even a similar title

They all expore gagas relationship with her celebrity status, the things she loves hates and the things she learned. I actually like when album tracks tie into eachother ,where certain themese are discussed in depths between a number of tracks just like in chromatica and lemonade

River 115,069
PI has a few problems: 1. 3 people from 3 different genres worked on it with Gaga: Kevin Parker, Bloodpop and and Mark Ronson, it's an awful mix, she had to work with Kevin exclusively on it. 2. Kevin's psychedelic sound only fits him, all the attempts of other pop girls who worked with him to replicate it, didn't succeed, because they simply don't understand this sound and PI was kinda rushed and Gaga didn't invest in understanding it imo. 3. bloodpop, he was very unnecessary for the whole record. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Fair but I still think gaga was able to achieve something dynamic with perfect illusion. Regardless of the behind the scenes dynamics the excecution is quite stellar to me atleast. I think its fans who didnt invest in understanding it. At that point fans just the original gaga sound and style back and poor PI didnt stand a chance.

Eh, I actually think the fact that it blends a bit of psychedelic, a bit of disco, a bit of an Americana flavor, a bit of arena rock, and a bit of funk is what makes the song work. It works fine it's just not a hit song. A hit is something you can tell even in its infancy is going to work. Just look at the demos for all of gaga's hits. there's something about each one where you can tell it has potential. PI is a nice song, but I don't think it ever really had that inherent "WOW this has potential" to it. For instance, that lovegame laptop demo sounds like crap, the applause demo laughable. But you can tell there's a kernel of something in there that just works. It's about good bones. Edited 16 hours ago by Ziggy
