Greta Thunberg detained by Israel. Updated.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 22, and several allies were taken into Israeli custody in international waters early Monday while attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, which faces a food crisis amid Hamas’s ongoing war with Israel.

“The ‘selfie yacht’ of the ‘celebrities’ is safely making its way to the shores of Israel,” the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) wrote in a post on the social platform X. “The passengers are expected to return to their home countries.”

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organized the Madleen ship to bring supplies to Gaza with Thunberg and others, said in a news release that the vessel was “attacked/forcibly intercepted by the Israeli military” and that “its unarmed civilian crew (was) abducted, and its life-saving cargo — including baby formula, food and medical supplies — confiscated.”

“If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel,” Thunberg said in a pre-recorded video the FFC released.

Seems those captured by the totally peaceful symbol of civilization in an otherwise savage middle east will be returned to their home countries after they dared tread in international waters with the intention of feeding childr- I mean, violent terrorists. Yup.

After reading this it's no surprise that Israel detained them.

(Not saying I agree with Israel detaining them by the way. Just not surprised) 

A man accused of being “a Hamas operative” based in London is a key figure behind Greta Thunberg’s Gaza-bound aid boat, it emerged on Monday.

Zaher Birawi, who was described in Parliament as a person with links to Hamas, called himself a “founding member” of the Freedom Flotilla International Coalition, which arranged the voyage by the aid boat Madleen.

In 2013, Mr Birawi was named by Israel as a Hamas operative in Europe, and is the head of the Europal Forum, which Israel designated as a terrorist organisation in 2021.

It's this part that I find hilarious 'cause yeah, their intentions could have definitely been to grab attention. 

Either they'd get through and give some people some help or they'd be detained and could make a statement through detention. Win/win.

Did they know this before or after the interception? The site's behind a paywall so I can't read it.

Also, I'm incredibly skeptical of who Israel deems a terrorist.

Yeah, I mean we’re talking about the government that justifies the killing of children in bombings by planting crisp, unblemished copies of Mein Kampf on their persons to claim they’re antisemitic terrorists. Truly vile.

I have been following the unfolding of these events since yesterday and tagging the official profile of authorities from my country on social media, as there is a crew member from my country. In addition to all the crimes being committed in Gaza and against the Palestinian people, there are now activists being treated as terrorists and in no context this is acceptable. People are being intercepted and attacked for bringing humanitarian aid! This is outrageous, this is hell on earth.

They would have known after this - if they didn't know before. 

Mr Birawi, a Palestinian-British journalist at an Arabic-language satellite TV channel in London, was at the launch of the Madleen a week ago, livestreaming it from its dock in Sicily. Ms Thunberg gave a speech before the boat set sail for Gaza.

Also they were detained in international waters. I'm not sure on the legality of that but...yeah

They're a satellite state of the US. If they weren't useful to the American military/government and the rest of the western world wasn't so ridiculously dependent on the US they would have been cooked a long time ago.
