chewing on pearls 472
lately I've been thinking about chromatica's slogan "no one thing is greater than another" and how this premise relates to gaga's concept for mayhem as well: this idea that all parts of herself, of her sound, are just as valid as the others, and that the darker parts are what keep the light parts afloat and vice versa. but if chromatica was gaga expressing some of her most intimate feelings from "behind prison bars, chain smoking on her front porch" and responding to the pressures of a "return to form" and what that meant at the time, then perhaps mayhem is gaga on the run, unleashing every part of who she is and "returning to form" in a way that feels truer to her actual artistry, not the artistry the general population seems to want to remember her music for. the chromatica > chromatical ball tour > mayhem > art of personal chaos pipeline is an interesting story about emotion, liberation, expression, pain, performance, and joy

And this is why some parts of this fanbase don't like the MAYHEM cover, because it reflects more of her true self than the artifice her previous album covers showcased. Brazilwood 4,181
I think she was studying physics of sound and got inspired. When talking about Sine From Above she mentioned that theory that the universe was created from sound and that's why she put the sine wave on the album cover. If you play a note with a sine wave it occupies a narrow bandwidth in the Hz scale and it doubles up or halves down while you go throughout the chromatic scale. Like this Maybe she wanted to mean that the Chromatica universe she created for the album was made from sound. I remember she mentioned something about colors relating to her depression as well. And the color frequencies are also represented with sine waves that double up and half down I think the meaning boils down to the fact that sound healed her. There are some "fierce" tracks like Babylon and Free Woman but it doesn't feel like an escape to me, it feels like a confrontation of her demons. Chromatica the album was about dancing through pain. Lady Gaga said that when recording Chromatica, she was happy, but other times (like on her balcony) she was very depressed (similar to ARTPOP). So the album is not so much escapism as it is about escapism, if that makes sense. It is about trying to find happiness in dancing and partying while suffering. This is kind of like Katys two songs from Smile, Cry About It Later and Teary Eyes. They are about escapism and trying to find happiness and fun while being in pain. he/him/his

KindnessPunk 1,944
It’s a state of mind. I think of it like an imaginary battleground where you’re pushing through some of your darkest thoughts. Wrestling with all kinds of thoughts, pain, and finding hope and strength to keep going. I especially love how she ends the album with “Babylon”, the perfect album ending. i know the lyrics are “battle for your life..babylon”…but it almost sounds like “battle for your life…battle on”, like keep going, you can do this. I actually love that it’s not clearly defined, like any great work of art, it’s open to interpretation. it’s a journey, its a state of mind, its a moment in time, it can’t end.
