But many of the songs on Chromatica aren't happy at all, they're extremely dark. There are some "fierce" tracks like Babylon and Free Woman but it doesn't feel like an escape to me, it feels like a confrontation of her demons.

Then again...Chromatic and the cringe (Dawn of Chromatica) very much felt like a forced effort from BloodPop rather than an authentic concept from Gaga

Remember....she didn't come up with the name until AFTER the album was finished...so she was just making songs with no real concept.

Idk what Gaga was hearing when she said the music "sounded" happy but the message and lyrics weren't that lol

Mayhem feels more like a polished Chromatica 2.0 imo...

I was joking too! My issue with ARTPOP is that every track is a different theme. It sounds like a really fierce RuPaul album to me, with no cohesion whatsoever. What is it about? Art? Sex? Drugs? Astronomy? Goddesses? Love? Cosmetics? Fury? Fashion? Performance?

It's a mess for me.

Oh no, someone dared to make an album where every single song is about something different and it's not ALL ABOUT LOVE AND S*X like literally 99% of commercial pop music,  how awful. :ladyhaha:

Her other albums aren't only about love and sex and they are very cohesive.

the point of ARTPOP was it's fragmented approach. the connective tissue is she wanted to explore the boundaries of art and of pop and the points where they converge. each song is a different attempt at doing so. it couldn't be clearer imo.

How does it explore the boundaries of art and pop and the points where they converge?

Be specific.

Chromatic refers to colors and she created a planet divided in tribes where which tribe had a color. Presumably this would be explored on the original Chromatica Ball and the special Vynil (I think it's the Record Store Day one) has a large booklet with a map of the planet showont where each tribe lives etc... It could've been really cool but (possibly because it was shot on iphone) the Stupid Love was very weak. Rain on Me is better but also did not explore this, and 911 is a masterpiece but it follows a whole new direction.

I wish she had used SL and Rain on Me to flesh these concepts out but the pandemic happened and of course it derailed her plans, so at the end of the day it is what is.

I think Chromatica happening during COVID is almost a surreal, accidental explanation for what the album and its title represented to Gaga and eventually us.

For Gaga, she was in an extremely depressed state of mind and did not want to create in the world that she was living in - having experienced public hate trains, personal heartbreak, and chronic physical pain. BloodPop had to rejuvenate her creative on the regular by reminding her that she’s “Lady Gaga”. When he would convince her to push forward and write lyrics, she escaped momentarily from the world that was hurting her. Chromatica became a place where a woman in her 30s who was feeling lost could rest her head and feel somewhat safe to be “Lady Gaga” - a place away from where she was currently suffering.

This kinda translated to us in the real world too. You couldn’t pay me to go back to that time period, but Chromatica, its release, the music, Rain On Me’s video, and the initial campaign were such a welcome escape that I remember gratefully and happily

Auralegends

Chromatica felt like such a great fantasy world to escape in. Maybe for Gaga a world to escape from the depressed state she was in.

Though I feel like Chromatica was (mis)used by some people (Bloodpop) for personal promotion and hype creation. It's like she was told to make a pop album, not because she wanted (Remember they had to drag her to her porch)

You guys need to realise her health was in a very poor place after JWT and she was clearly still trying to find closure during Chromatica album process.

That said she clearly came into her own again during the tour.
